The First ‘Suicide Squad’ Cast Photo Looks Just About Perfect

Much has been said concerning the upcoming Suicide Squad movie. As a film that will feature almost exclusively the villains of the DC universe, it’ll be a rare animal in a world that prefers to focus on gritty, tortured heroes. With that, there’s always going to be uncertainty surrounding a movie that focuses on a cast of secondary characters. While Jared Leto’s Joker will play a part, for the most part we’ll be getting the stories of DC villains whom a vast majority of mainstream audiences have never heard of. The Suicide Squad featured in The CW’s Arrow helped raise at least some awareness, but for the most part the team remains a mystery.

At least a small part of that mystery was helped this last week, following the release of the first cast photo for the movie. It shows us a fully-costumed Suicide Squad, including Margot Robbie’s much-anticipated take on Harley Quinn. In addition to Quinn, it also features Slipknot (Adam Beach), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman), Deadshot (Will Smith), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and El Diablo (Jay Hernandez).

It’s a diverse subset of the group that should give us a weirdly intriguing dynamic, given the diverse backgrounds of each character (as well as their unique mental instabilities). It’s a team composed by assassins, psychopaths, and everything in between, making for a sort of Expendables of secondary (and yet incredibly competent) DC villains. Looking at DC’s recent cinematic selection of villains so far, all we’ve really seen is Batman’s Rogues Gallery in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy and General Zod in the latest SupermanSuicide Squad will serve the necessary purpose of expanding a DC universe that so far has only included two heroes and little else outside of that small sphere.

What the cast photo really serves to do though is show us that for the most part, director David Ayers is doing what he can to stay true to the comic origins of each character. Harley Quinn looks like she was pulled straight out of creator Bruce Timm’s illustrations, and with the exception of Killer Croc, everyone looks to be a spitting image of their fictional counterpart. Ayers even later Tweeted out another photo of Will Smith’s Deadshot in his full sharpshooter getup, featuring the iconic red eye and white mask he’s known for.

Interestingly enough, we don’t see Leto’s Joker or Viola Davis as the ruthless handler Amanda Waller, giving us a glimpse into what we can expect from their respective roles. Odds are the Joker will be featured less heavily, as a character who never found himself on the Suicide Squad roster in the comics. Despite that fact, he’s always had close ties. Harley Quinn’s psychosis is deeply rooted in Joker’s manipulation; perhaps that will play heavily into the plot once more is revealed?

News from the set of Suicide Squad has been monitored closely, with many dubbing the movie as DC’s big chance at separating its franchise from the Marvel hype. It’s something completely off the beaten path of comic book movies, features the star power of Will Smith and director David Ayers, and comes with a cast of characters we likely never would have seen appear otherwise. It’s why so much controversy has arisen from the reveal of what characters will look like, and likely will continue to see this level of scrutiny once we start getting trailers.
