‘The Gifted’ Star Natalie Alyn Lind Says She’s Always Had a ‘Dark Edge’
As Natalie Alyn Lind grows up, her roles get darker and darker. She went from playing Bruce Wayne’s love interest Silver St. Cloud on Gotham to fugitive mutant Lauren Strucker on The Gifted. Now she’s in a dark, moder Beauty and the Beast riff on CBS All Access’s Tell Me A Story. She plays Ashley Rose Pruitt, a country music pop star whose fairy tale comes crashing down.
Lind spoke with Showbiz Cheat Sheet in August after a Television Critics Association panel for Tell Me A Story. Talking about her career as she’s grown up, Lind revealed one thing she’s always had since she was a kid. You can see her in new episodes of Tell Me A Story Thursdays on CBS All Access.
Natalie Alyn Lind sees the ‘dark edge’ in her childhood
Thinking about growing up on camera, Natalie Alyn Lind first speculated that her roles were getting deeper.
“I’ve naturally been kind of growing up and I think as I get older, the roles that I’m playing are becoming a little bit more dynamic,” Lind began.
Then she realized that many of her early roles were just as dynamic as The Gifted and Tell Me A Story.
“One of the things I love just looking back on some of my earlier work that was a little bit edgier and being like oh, so I always had this kind of dark edge to me,” Lind said. “That’s the coolest part for me is I have two younger sisters too so I get to watch them grow up through their work too.”
Natalie Alyn Lind always gravitated towards dark drama
There is some comedy on Lind’s resume. She did episodes of Wizard of Waverly Place and iCarly, but even most of her early roles were on serious dramas like One Tree Hill, Army Wives and Criminal Minds.
“Acting was always a passion of mine for a really long time,” Lind said. “I love comedy too but there’s something about taking a situation and putting a real life twist on it and hoping that somebody watching it, that I was put in the scenario of them, can watch it and have respect for that. So I think I realized that pretty young.”
Natalie Alyn Lind is a natural
Natalie Alyn Lind’s mother, Barbara Alyn Woods, is an actor so dark drama was already in Natalie’s blood, just like the mutant gene on The Gifted.
“I have never taken one acting class,” she said. “My mom’s an actress and she was on One Tree Hill so any time that I ever had acting questions they all went through her.”
Outside of acting, it was a happy childhood
Natalie Alyn Lind could play troubled characters for work. At home, she was happy.
“It was kind of a glamorized childhood because we were constantly on planes and doing everything we could to get out and follow my mom, but it was as normal as normal can be,” Lind said. “You kind of just get the perks of living at this accelerated life pace but I would never change it for the world.”
