‘The Good Doctor’: Where to Watch the Show Before New Episodes Air on ABC
ABC’s The Good Doctor aired its midseason finale at the beginning of December 2018, leaving audiences on a cliffhanger true to its style but no less agonizing to bear.
Whether you’ve heard about the show and want to see if it lives up to the hype or you’ve fallen behind and want to catch up before January 14, episodes are available on various platforms online for [binge-]watching at your own convenience.
Here’s a quick synopsis of the American show (and the foreign one it’s based on) and where you can watch old and new episodes online.
What show is The Good Doctor based on?
The Good Doctor stars Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a surgical resident living with autism. Shaun also has something called savant syndrome, which gives him genius-like skills and abilities despite his intellectual and emotional challenges.
While it has become a majorly popular show in the Western world, the show is actually based on a medical drama that premiered in South Korea.
The original show, titled Good Doctor, aired in 2013 and only lasted 20 episodes. It was highly successful, however, and House creator David Shore happily adapted it for U.S. audiences. The pilot episodes of both shows are nearly identical script-wise.
During its active seasons, the show airs on ABC at 10 p.m. ET. But there are other ways to watch if you don’t have cable or you ever don’t get the chance to sit down and watch a new episode live.
Where to watch The Good Doctor online
If you’re behind on the show and want to catch up before new episodes air on ABC (and you don’t have them all waiting on your DVR), there are plenty of places to stream episodes online. You’ll have to pay for most of them, but most fans agree it’s probably worth a few dollars per episode.
- Hulu: All episodes available for subscribers
- iTunes: Individual episodes are available for $2.99 each; full seasons for $24.99
- Google Play: Individual episodes cost $1.99; full seasons are $29.99
- Amazon Prime Video: Individual episodes cost $2.99; full seasons are $29.99
- YouTube: Individual episodes are available for $1.99 each; full seasons are $29.99
- Abc.com: The network’s website has the most recent episodes available free if you have a cable subscription
Those who already pay for streaming services such as Hulu don’t have to pay extra for episodes of shows like The Good Doctor. But that probably leaves you wondering: Why isn’t Netflix also on this list?
Is The Good Doctor on Netflix?
While many popular ABC dramas have made their way to Netflix, The Good Doctor has yet to join them. Some sources speculate it’s never going to — not because it’s not popular enough, but because a deal hasn’t likely been made to allow this to happen.
ABC is owned by Disney, who also owns a large portion of the content distributed on Hulu. When it comes to shows that air on that network specifically, Hulu automatically has the streaming rights unless Disney makes a separate deal with Netflix (as they have with shows such as Grey’s Anatomy).
So if you were hoping to catch up using your Netflix subscription, you’re probably out of luck there.
The original Korean drama is available on Netflix in some countries, but not in the United States.
