‘The Good Place’: D’Arcy Carden Calls Her Emmy Nomination ‘Shocking’

Any fan of The Good Place will vouch for D’Arcy Carden as a phenomenal asset to the show. Playing everyone’s favorite “not a robot”, Janet, and several other iterations of her main character, she brings both humor and heart to the show. When the show wrapped with its fourth and final season, Carden was hoping that it would earn itself an Emmy nomination. But, she was hardly expecting one for herself.

Thanks to her work on season 4 of The Good Place, Carden earned her first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. But. while the actor was tuned in to see if her fellow castmates and writers got nominated, she was (in true Janet fashion) not thinking much about herself. In an interview with The A.V. Club, Carden got candid about learning that she was up for an Emmy.

D’Arcy Carden on how she learned of her Emmy nomination

“When you watch, they don’t announce anything about supporting,” Carden shared about watching the Emmy nomination announcements. “So I was watching to see if the show got nominated, and Ted got nominated like he always does—which is awesome. But I knew they weren’t going to announce supporting, so it was out of my mind. I was like, ‘Oh, the list will come out later and then we’ll see what’s up,'” The Good Place alum revealed.

Carden was still watching the announcements live when her publicist managed to break the news to her. “A few minutes into watching, I got a text from my publicist and she said, ‘I hate to spoil this if you don’t know already, but the list is up and you’re on it!’ Which was so exciting and shocking,” The Good Place actor added.

Carden and her husband were shocked by the news

Though it’s clear that Carden has more than earned her nomination, the news was still unexpected. The actor has given super solid performances throughout all four seasons of The Good Place. Since she hadn’t been nominated before, she wasn’t getting her hopes up for the nomination.

“It was very surreal,” Carden confessed. “I think there was a part of me that thought, ‘We’ve been off the off-air for a while, I haven’t gotten it before…’ There was all these reasons I was not expecting it. So my husband and I were just sitting on the couch staring at each other. We just kept going, ‘Holy sh*t.’ We weren’t screaming and dancing and jumping around,” the Barry actor added. Of course, Carden’s reaction changed when she learned that her fellow castmate from The Good Place had also earned his first Emmy nod.

Carden got really excited when she learned another cast member from ‘The Good Place’ was nominated

“Very soon after that, I learned that William Jackson Harper was also nominated. And then we started screaming and jumping and FaceTiming him and his girlfriend Ali,” Carden shared. Carden continued on to add that simply being in the cast of The Good Place was an opportunity that she’ll always have immense gratitude for. But, the Emmy nod was just a cherry on top of an incredible experience. No matter if Carden snags the award or not, we look forward to seeing what’s next for her.
