Since the pilot, Jamil has been one of the stars of The Good Place. She portrays Tahani Al-Jamil, a British socialite who died while trying to take down a statue of her sister, Kamila, whose shadow she always lived in, despite her best efforts.

Both Tahani and Jamil have come a long way since the series began. While the character has become a more mature, considerate individual, Jamil has gone from a brand new actress in Hollywood to making headlines daily for her activist work, especially in the areas of physical and mental health.

The Good Place Season 4 will be the show’s last

We’re living in a time where network TV series can last more than a decade. But while some, like Grey’s Anatomy, have no end in sight, series such as The Good Place have to find a way to wrap up. Fortunately, the series has been given the chance to do that on its own terms.

In June, it was announced by NBC and series creator Mike Schur that after the upcoming fourth season, The Good Place will be over. Though Schur says that they’ve been “been tempted” to continue the show, “we don’t want to tread water just because the water is so warm and pleasant.”

Jamil shared that she is done filming the series

At July, at San Diego Comic-Con, the stars hinted that they were nearing the end of filming. This proved to be true when, on Aug. 3, 2019, Jamil became the first cast member to post that she had completed her last scenes for The Good Place.

Jamil shared a photo of herself with her boyfriend, musician James Blake, as he hugs her on set. She wrote that she “balled[sic] her f***ing eyes out,” adding, “what a mess I will be for a while.” Jamil also thanked Blake for being there for her during this emotional time.

On this day in April 2016, I had just shot a pilot with these ridiculously talented people, all of whom I was terrified of, because I’d never acted a day in my life before, and I felt incredibly unworthy of them. I was in a show created by Mike Schur, the god of comedy, and all of his (infuriatingly young and gifted) writers, and most of my scenes were opposite @teddanson I had no idea what we were in for. Or if you would all hate us; or just hate me! I didn’t know if people would get it; or if we could ever top the best comedy season finale I’ve ever seen. But it all went just fine. And the writers just continued to amaze us. The crew propped us up and built an amazing show and environment for us to work with them in. Mike and Morgan Sackett turned out to be the best bosses ever. And we are rolling into season 4, ending on our terms, with a golden globe nomination, an Emmy nomination; a TCA award, an AFI award, a critics choice nomination and the best fans a show could ever ask for, that send us their love and support from all around the world. You guys are so smart and fun and your costumes when you dress up as us are SO cool. This was above and beyond the most extraordinary thing to happen to me. And to all of us I think. And today as I shoot my final scene I thank everyone involved in this beautiful experience. It was a proper team effort and I will never forget any of this, or any of you. ❤️ signing off as Tahani officially, as I series wrap. Lots of love. Jam. X

Jamil has always shared with her social media followers how much she loves and appreciates her co-stars and the opportunities that The Good Place, her first real acting gig, have given her. She shared a throwback of herself with the rest of the main cast from April 2016, after having just shot the pilot.

The actress wrote about her experiences and how far they’ve all come. “This was above and beyond the most extraordinary thing to happen to me,” Jamil wrote. “And today as I shoot my final scene I thank everyone involved in this beautiful experience. It was a proper team effort and I will never forget any of this, or any of you.”

What will Jamil do next?

Though The Good Place is over, Jamil isn’t slowing down. She is set to be one of the hosts of the upcoming TBS game show The Misery Index. Jamil has also been doing quite a bit of voice work: She provided the voice for a character in the Disney Channel series DuckTales this year, and will voice the recurring role of Auntie Pushpa in the upcoming Disney Junior series Mira, Royal Detective.

Additionally, Jamil is making waves in other ways. She is one of the many stars gracing the cover of Vogue in Sept. 2019 (edited by Meghan Markle herself). Jamil was recently named one of the 25 Most Influential People on the Internet by Time, and was one of InStyle’s Badass Women this summer. Her Instagram account, I Weight, is set to become a lifestyle brand. So stay tuned for a lot more Jamil in the future.
