He’s responsible for some of the most successful television shows of the past decade, but many Americans might not even recognize his name. Michael Schur is the creator of the renowned TV series The Good Place, as well as a slew of other hits. With the exciting news that The Good Place has been renewed for a fourth season, let’s recap some of Michael Schur’s other career-defining shows.
What is ‘The Good Place’ about?
In September 2016, The Good Place premiered on the NBC network. Kristen Bell, best known for the cult classic show Veronica Mars, plays Eleanor Shellstrop, an average woman who wakes up and realizes that she’s in the afterlife. A man named Michael, played by Ted Danson, welcomes her to the afterlife, a paradise that he designed only for the most morally upright, known as “The Good Place.”
Shellstrop carries a secret – she’s not nearly as perfect as Michael seems to believe. She has to try and hide the truth of her character, while at the same time striving to be worthy of remaining in The Good Place. The show was an instant hit from the moment it debuted. Critics and fans alike loved the original storyline, clever humor, and believable acting by Bell, Danson, and a whole host of other talented actors. In the show’s three seasons, it has won multiple awards, including the 2017 Critic’s Choice Television Award for “Most Exciting New Series.” The Good Place is set to return to television for the fourth season in late 2019.
Schur’s other popular shows
Michael Schur has an impressive background in comedy and television production. He graduated from Harvard University in 1997, and by 1998, he was a writer for NBC’s long-running sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. He worked on SNL until 2004, when he left the show to begin production on what was to become one of the most popular television shows ever.
The Office debuted in March 2005. It starred Steve Carell, Jenna Fischer, John Krasinski, and many other talented cast members that went on to achieve great things in their respective careers. Schur acted as producer and writer for the show and even made several appearances throughout the series’ run, playing the cousin of Dwight Schrute. The Office ran until 2013 and even though it is no longer on the air, it gains legions of fans through reruns every year. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest American TV shows of all time.
Schur started working on the concept for Parks and Recreation as a possible spin-off from The Office but eventually fleshed the characters and storyline out enough to merit a brand-new show. It debuted in 2009, starring Amy Poehler and Chris Pratt. The format of the show was similar to that of The Office, with characters speaking directly to the camera in a mock-interview format, and became equally as popular, winning multiple awards in the six-year run.
What’s next for Michael Schur?
Michael Schur has definitely discovered the winning formula when it comes to American television. In addition to creating the shows The Office, Parks and Recreation, and The Office, Schur is responsible for the Netflix series Master of None and Brooklyn Nine-Nine on Fox. Currently, Schur is hard at work with his three hit shows as well as working on a brand-new one. Abby’s is an NBC comedy series that Schur produces. It premiered on March 28th and is already receiving a very positive critical reception.
