How Season 3 of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ ended

During Season 3 of The Handmaid’s Tale, June worked with Marthas, Handmaids, and Commander Lawrence to help 52 children escape Gilead. In order to get the children and a handful of Marthas to the plane, June stays behind and distracts a number of guards.

Several Handmaids also stay behind and help June, and to save them she breaks off from the group to lead a guard away. She kills him, but is shot in the process. Rita and a handful of Marthas successfully escape with the children and safely land in Canada.

Alma, Janine, and other Handmaids find June and carry her in a makeshift stretcher. While fans know that June’s plan was a success, her fate is left unknown and the season ended on a cliffhanger.

Fans think Aunt Lydia will be punished for what June did

In the teaser trailer for Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale, fans are given a glimpse of Aunt Lydia. A side of her face is bloodied, and she is not wearing the uniform of an Aunt. She appears to be dressed as a Martha or someone sent to the Colonies.

“She is out there planning who knows what kind of atrocities to visit upon our righteous nation,” Aunt Lydia says. “I never allowed myself to see her for what she clearly is, beyond redemption.”

Based on this brief clip, some fans suspect Aunt Lydia is punished for 52 children being taken from Gilead.

In a Reddit thread, one fan speculated, “Soooooo, did anyone else think Aunt Lydia looked like she was in the colonies or was it just me??”

Another fan replied. “She wouldn’t be trying to get revenge on ‘her’ from the Colonies so I doubt it. I imagine she’s been roughed up a bit by the Guardians to see what she knew. But is ultimately released and is PISSED OFF… OR this is in the middle of her interrogation! And she’s using all her righteous indignation to get out of there! And it’s going to be a homage-to-the-Testaments episode!!! OMG!”

It seems Commander Lawrence might also be in custody in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

The new trailer also features several shots of Commander Lawrence. In one scene, Commander Lawrence and Nick are shown speaking about June.

“She changed me, she changed you,” Nick says.

“She does have strong claws, that one,” Commander Lawrence replies.

About a minute into the trailer, Lawrence is seen walking with two men dressed in black following him. This makes it seem like he could also be brought in for questioning or arrested for helping June.

“In one of the clips it looks like Commander Lawrence is in custody,” a fan wrote on Reddit.

June will help the rebellion

The new scenes in the teaser trailer show that June is very much alive in The Handmaid’s Tale. At various points in the trailer, June is shown with her friends who rescued her. During some scenes they are dressed in their Handmaids uniforms and walking through the woods. However, in other scenes they are dressed as Marthas and appear to be in hiding.

“These women deserve to be helped,” June says. “But I can’t do this alone.”

At one point, a man who has never appeared in the show before tells them “Blessed be the squad.”

“I don’t think they had very much footage yet at all, and a lot of the new clips were generic enough they could easily fit elsewhere,” a fan speculated on Reddit. “Still, they seem to be hinting hard June will no longer be a handmaid and will instead be underground working for the resistance in some capacity.”
