Filming of Season 4 of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is currently postponed

On March 15, Deadline reported that filming for the newest season of The Handmaid’s Tale is delayed.

“Hulu’s Emmy-winning dystopian drama series The Handmaid’s Tale is shutting down production amid escalating coronavirus pandemic and a national emergency declared in the U.S,” read the report. “The drama has been filming its fourth season, which marks the directorial debut of Emmy-winning star Elisabeth Moss. It is produced by MGM Television, whose shows are all in various stages of winding down, as are virtually all Hollywood productions.”

The cast of The Handmaid’s Tale was originally set to film the fourth season from March 2020 to July 2020. When filming resumes, Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale is slated to have 10 episodes.

How much the cast filmed of Season 4

On May 5, Gold Derby posted an interview with Fiennes. During the interview, Fiennes discussed how much the cast of The Handmaid’s Tale filmed before production shut down.

According to Fiennes and Gold Derby, the cast filmed for about two weeks before production was halted. For Fiennes, this was frustrating as he spent time working with Moss, who plays June in the show, as a director.

“It is and doubly frustrating because Lizzie, who I think has got so much on her plate, has managed to make room to direct in Season 4, and what a wonderful director she is,” Fiennes told Gold Derby. “So the first episode I kicked off with, although it was out of sequence, was working with Lizzie… She’s brought all her genius as an actor into the role of a director.”

“He’s obviously going to be arrested, he’s in a sort of holding cell at the moment, but I think, you know, he’ll have a lot to answer for in terms of war crimes so I think there’s a desperate need to become a kind of informer,” he said of Waterford. “And if he can present himself to the authorities as a way of prizing open the secrets of Gilead maybe that’ll lessen his sentence. So I think he’s playing a game, but it’s going to be fascinating in Season 4 about how his position in Canada will be one way where he can persuade the authorities to lessen his sentence.”

Fiennes also revealed that Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale will begin with an intense scene between Luke, June’s husband, and Commander Waterford in Canada.

“And actually, we pick up Season 4 with another one of those scenes which we just shot with Lizzie, and that was really exciting,” Fiennes said. “So it’s how that relationship further develops as Luke needs more information from Fred and as Fred holds a lot of the cards in terms of Gilead and what might happen to June.”
