‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 3, Episode 9: Things Are Getting Very Dark

This week, The Handmaid’s Tale took us to a place in June’s mind that viewers didn’t know existed. We saw her almost step over the edge of no return when she tried to end OfMatthew’s suffering. She contemplated killing her for the entire time she was stuck in that hospital room. June (Elisabeth Moss) was clearly not all there, and was desperate for a way out.

Unfortunately for June, Aunt Lydia forces her to stay with her walking partner until the baby is safely delivered. Apparently, this literally means she is not allowed to leave the room. June is forced to sit on the ground and pray for OfMatthew’s recovery and/or delivery of a happy and healthy baby.

She starts to slowly lose it, when all she seems to hear is “Heaven is a Place on Earth.” Even the liquid in OfMatthew’s IV seems to drip along to the melody in poor June’s mind. She is unraveling and desperate to escape her conferment.

June makes a connection with the doctor

While stuck in the hospital, June tries to cut Serena (Yvonne Strahovski), but ends up cutting herself during the altercation. Serena tells the doctor to tend to her, and that June tried to cut herself intentionally. He comes in to assist June, and we learn that he actually knew her mother, who was also a doctor. He describes June’s mother as “scary” and seems to open up to her more.

Does Serena have a hidden agenda?

It’s plain that Serena is desperate to get baby Nichole back, but some fans have theories on the rest of her true intentions. They believe Serena not only wants to rescue herself and Nichole, but other people stuck in Gilead as well. In this week’s episode, we see Serena not tell on June and get her in the serious trouble she could have.

A Reddit user, 321equinox wrote, “What if Serena is only pretending to follow Fred, and pretending she wants the baby back? But she is actually still planning to work with June to take down Gilead and/or free both of them, Nicole and Hannah.”

The Reddit user continued, “She can’t let June in on it and risk being overheard with all the attention on them. If they were to make a getaway, as Nicole’s mother, she could go anywhere she wants with her child and ‘her handmaid’, (to all outward appearances.) I realise it seems she is keeping the peace with June to keep up appearances.”

Eventually, we see the baby is delivered premature but healthy. June is finally allowed to leave the hospital that has become her torture chamber. As she starts to walk away, she sees girls in pink walking with wives all wearing blue. It’s revealed earlier that the girls are there at the hospital for tests, as they have become fertile and are now menstruating.

June speaks to one of the girls before leaving the hospital. The girl reveals to her that she can now have babies, but will wait until she is married in a few years’ time.

“Is that what you want,” asked June to the poor innocent child. “Oh yes,” replied the girl. “So so much.” It’s a turning point for June, and she realizes she must fight to help all of these girls and women stuck in the oppression that is Gilead.
