When Does ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 3 Air on Hulu?
During the Super Bowl, a teaser trailer for Season 3 of The Handmaid’s Tale aired, and it quickly became a popular topic of discussion. The spot didn’t reveal very much about the upcoming season, but it did give a few hints as to where Gilead’s residents are after the events of Season 2. Here’s what we know about when the new season will be landing on Hulu.
Seasons 1 and 2 of The Handmaid’s Tale were well-regarded
The first two seasons of the show, based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, were critical and commercial hits. The series was, arguably, Hulu’s first true success when it comes to original content, and remains its highest-regarded property.
In addition to public opinion, The Handmaid’s Tale has won numerous Emmys and Golden Globes, for acting, directing, writing, and much more. The third season has been highly anticipated.
What happened in Season 2 of The Handmaid’s Tale
A lot happened in the first two seasons: We were introduced to Gilead, where the few remaining fertile women in the country are taken as Handmaids, and used to produce offspring for the leaders of the community. The main story follows June, a Handmaid known as Offred (named for Commander Fred Waterford), looking into her time prior to Gilead, the lives of her husband and friends on the outside, and her struggle to break free from this new society.
The final episode of Season 2 saw June about to take her chances with her new daughter on the outside, only to decide at the last minute to stay in Gilead, likely to look for her older daughter, Hannah. This, along with Serena’s choice to disobey the Commander, are just two of the many situations that will continue to develop in Season 3.
The third season will be here soon
The teaser trailer did not include a release date. However, the past two seasons have both begun in late April, airing one episode per week on Wednesdays through June/July. If this is any indication of what’s to come, the third season will begin on April 24, 2019.
How many episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 will there be?
Often, when a series is renewed, we are given an episode order. However, this wasn’t the case for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3, but we can guess. Again, taking cues from the first two seasons, there will likely be between 10 and 13 episodes. Season 1 had 10 episodes, while Season 2 was bumped up to 13. Currently, there are only 10 slots for episodes on IMDb, but that could certainly change.
There will be new characters
Aside from continuing the stories of June, Serena, and the other characters we already know, there will be some new faces in Season 3. Variety reported in January that Chris Meloni (Law & Order: SVU) and Elizabeth Reaser would be (The Haunting of Hill House) will be portraying Commander and Mrs. Winslow, who Serena and Commander Waterford will stay with while traveling. Additionally, Bradley Whitford’s Commander Lawrence, who played a role in helping June in the Season 2 finale, will be returning.
There could be many more seasons to come
Given its popularity, it’s reasonable to assume that there could be new seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale for years to come. Showrunner Bruce Miller has affirmed this, stating that he had “roughed it out to about 10 seasons.” While this may seem like a lot, he added that they are still following the “arc of the novel,” just taking things a bit slower. And now that Margaret Atwood is writing a sequel, there’s going to be even more material to draw from.
