June, or Offred, is played by Elisabeth Moss and is the fearless main character and handmaid. She transforms over the course of three seasons into a rebel fighting for the cause. She knows that sacrifices need to be made and she isn’t afraid to make them, even at the cost of other people’s lives.

She makes the tough choices that need to be made and even sacrifices herself when needed to help propel the cause forward. She does big things and changes Gilead in a number of ways for the better. She even makes sure a large number of children get out of Gilead and make it to safety to Canada, even when it means she herself can’t escape because she’s needed to lead a successful distraction.

Dr. Emily Malek, or Ofglen (Alexis Bledel) as she is later known to those in Gilead, is another handmaid trapped alongside June. She faces terrible torture and is treated as a common criminal. However, Emily doesn’t just sit back and take it. She rebels and even runs over a Guardian before being subdued. She gets sent to the colonies for her behavior and endures unimaginable conditions there as well. Emily is allowed to come back to become a handmaid again, but eventually escapes with baby Nichole, June’s daughter to Canada and to freedom.

Aunt Lydia

Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) is unlike any other character in the series. She is both cruel and kind in her own twisted way. She has the task to train women who are known to be fertile at the Red Center. She has no problem punishing these women and seems to kind of enjoy it. She even removes Janine’s (Madeline Brewer) eye at one point. At the same time, Aunt Lydia appears to care for the women in some way and it’s a fine line she seems to walk. Her true intentions aren’t really known and it’s interesting to watch.

Moira (Samira Wiley) is June’s best friend and she is also captured and forced into sexual slavery in Gilead. She makes a real name for herself among the handmaids when she escapes from the Red Center. She is eventually taken back into servitude and slavery when she is forced to work at Jezebel’s. She eventually escapes to Canada with cunning and skill. She tells it like it is and keeps it real no matter the circumstances.

Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) is a Commander’s wife and goes through a metamorphosis of changes over the course of the show. She does everything in her power to get June pregnant so she can have her dream child. She’ll do anything to get close to the baby Nichole, whom she sees as her own. She even sells out her own husband for access to her. Her ruthlessness comes back to bite her in the end. She gets arrested and her crimes are finally used against her.

These are just a few of the most memorable and interesting characters on the hit Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale.
