‘The Handmaid’s Tale’: The Real Reason Rita ‘Won’t’ Return to Gilead

Episode 13 of season 3 of The Handmaid’s Tale was amazing for a number of reasons. June did what she promised and helped get numerous children to the safety of Canada. Rita (Amanda Brugel) was one of a few others who escaped along with the children to freedom. But will she ever have to return to Gilead?

Fans will remember Rita was a Martha in Commander Waterford’s (Joseph Fiennes) home. She and June (Elisabeth Moss) grew quite close under the same roof. She saw and probably heard a lot of stuff that may come in handy in regards to the Canadian government.

Rita now has her whole life ahead of her as she tries to find some semblance of normalcy in her new world. However, there’s no way she could ever forget her time in slavery.

June is the reason Rita made it to Canada

If it wasn’t for June, Rita wouldn’t have made it to Canada and it’s something she’s distinctly aware of. When she sees Emily (Alexis Bledel) after so long, she is quick to tell her what happened and how she got to where she is. Emily even introduces Rita to Luke (O-T Fagbenle), June’s husband. Rita doesn’t mince words and straight-up tells him she’s only here because of June.

“You’re Luke. It’s really good to meet you,” Rita says as she embraces him. “She did this. June. Your June. She did this. She did everything.,” she tells him.

Rita’s world changed quickly

Amanda Brugel, who plays Rita, spoke with Bazaar.com about season 3 and that explosive finale. Things seemed to change for Rita really quickly in a short period of time. “Yeah, and I didn’t know she was going to escape until I got the script, about four days before we started shooting,” Brugel said. “I had no idea what her participation in the resistance was. I had to do very quick research to see what happens to people when they’re taken out of a horrific situation and brought back [to normalcy]—just the amount of shock and relief and joy, and also pain and fear.”

Brugel also spoke about how she will no longer be wearing her famous Martha costume. It sounds like Rita won’t be going back to Gilead any time soon, which is good news for her character. She can now try to find some happiness and start a new life away from the shackles of Gilead.

“I realized I won’t be able to wear that costume again. Other actors have had flashbacks where they’ve worn other costumes, but for me, that costume has been like a character within a character for me,” Brugel said. “I can understand that if someone was taken out of a horrible situation, like with Stockholm syndrome, it must be terrifying to be placed in a new environment and not have that space and that place, however horrible, to rely on.”

Did Brugel let it slip that her character won’t ever return to Gilead? Fans are hoping so and the odds seem to be leaning that way. Rita has found a new life and will hopefully use her skills and the things she’s learned to bring Gilead down. She may even have something to do with getting June out in the end. Hopefully, the answers will come in season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale.
