‘The Irishman’: We Finally Know When Martin Scorsese’s New Netflix Movie Will Be In Theaters
Netflix is about more than just binge-watching Stranger Things. Recently, the streaming service has been sinking more money into prestigious movies that have a chance at winning big at major awards shows. Earlier this year, Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma snagged 10 Oscar nominations, including one for best picture, and took home three awards, including best director. It was the first time a Netflix original movie had been nominated for best picture, and not everyone was happy about that — including Steven Spielberg.
Though not everyone believes Netflix deserves a place at the Oscars table, that isn’t stopping the company from acquiring films that could walk away with major awards. In a few months, Martin Scorsese’s new movie The Irishman will be available on Netflix. But in an effort to appease some in the film industry, the movie will be seen in theaters across the U.S. for several weeks before it’s available to stream on Netflix.
‘The Irishman’ will open in theaters November 1
To be eligible for an Oscar nomination, a film has to play in a Los Angeles area theater for at least a week. The Irishman, which marks the first feature-length collaboration between Scorsese and Robert DeNiro since 1995’s Casino, will exceed that requirement.
The Scorsese movie — which is based on I Heard You Paint Houses, a book about a mob hitman who claimed to be involved in the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa — will open in theaters in Los Angeles and New York on November 1. The film will be seen in theaters in major U.S. cities as well as the U.K. starting November 8. The film’s world premiere will be on September 27 at the opening night of the New York Film Festival, Deadline reported.
You won’t be able to see ‘The Irishman’ at major chain theaters
While The Irishman will get a nationwide theatrical run before it’s available for streaming, you won’t be able to see the movie at major multiplexes.
Theaters that are part of the AMC, Cineplex, Cinemark, and Regal chains won’t show The Irishman. That’s because those theaters wanted Netflix to agree to keep the movie off of its streaming platform for three months in order to encourage people to show up and buy tickets. Netflix wouldn’t agree to those terms.
‘The Irishman’ will be on Netflix starting November 27
While some film buffs will want to head to the theater to see The Irishman on the big screen, most viewers will likely wait to watch the movie in the comfort of their own home. And they won’t have to wait long. The movie will be available to stream on Netflix starting November 27 — the day before Thanksgiving.
Other Netflix movies will also be shown in theaters
The Irishman isn’t the only Netflix original that will screen in theaters before it’s available to stream.
Laundromat, a movie about the Panama Papers directed by Steven Soderbergh, will be in theaters September 27 and on Netflix October 18.
Dolemite Is My Name, which stars Eddie Murphy as filmmaker Rudy Ray Moore, is in theaters October 4 and on Netflix October 25.
The King, an adaptation of several Shakespeare plays about Henry V starring Timothée Chalamet, is in theaters October 11 and on Netflix November 1.
Marriage Story, directed by Noah Baumbach and starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson will be in theaters November 6 and on Netflix December 6.
