Fans can’t seem to get enough of this show. Every year the fan base seems to grow even though the series doesn’t sport a lot of advertising. Dreymon credits the fans with building up that much-needed support to keep bringing the show back each season.

“The fans have been amazing,” Dreymon told Variety. “It’s been a word-of-mouth thing. We’ve never had a lot of advertising. We somehow manage to survive anyway and that’s all thanks to the fans. They’re extremely supportive, extremely kind, and very enthusiastic. We’re all very grateful.”

Dreymon says ‘season 4 looks bigger and more costly’

Season 4 was more than impressive. There were huge battle scenes to rival any the earlier seasons have done previously. Dreymon admits they actually didn’t have a larger budget this season, but credits the entire team with making the season look spectacular.

“I am stunned by how our whole team manages to pull this off,” Dreymon said. “Season 4 looks bigger and more costly than the previous seasons. We didn’t have a bigger budget. When you’re in the midst of [the battle scenes], with the stunt teams that are distributed on each attacking line, and you see just all these horses racing towards you with these guys in armor with swords and spears, it is so impressive. You just have adrenaline pumping. It gives you a little taste of what it really must have been like.”

Season 4 introduces fans to Uhtred’s two oldest children

There were a number of new characters in season 4, including Uhtred’s two oldest children. They are both teenagers raised away from their father. Uhtred’s daughter is much more like him. Her name is Stiorra (Ruby Hartley) and she lives at Aethelflaed’s (Millie Brady) estate. Uhtred’s son is named Uhtred (Finn Elliot) as well and he’s been raised in the church.

What about Uhtred’s third child?

The new season brings Uhtred closer to his children. However, many fans questioned where his younger son was. The executive producer of the series, Nigel Marchant, spoke with RadioTimes.com about season 4 and he addressed the issue.

Uhtred’s wife died giving birth to a son and there was no mention of him in season 4, something fans were concerned with. Marchant mentions there were so many new characters in the new season and only 10 episodes to get through.

“So, we really felt that we were introducing Uhtred’s two children, we also had Aelfwynn and Aethelstan who were caught up in all the action, and just that it would be one character too many,” Marchant said. “We don’t like to deviate from the books, we like to keep the characters and the essence there, but sometimes it just doesn’t work. But that’s not to say that we couldn’t see them in the future.”

Season 4 of The Last Kingdom really does feel like it’s bigger and better than the first three seasons.
