‘The Last Kingdom’: When Will Filming Start for Season 5?
Fans of The Last Kingdom have been wondering for months when the series will finally start filming its highly anticipated season 5, and we now have a time frame for when that will happen. Since the announcement of a new season, fans have been patiently waiting for news. Well, we have a little bit to nibble on for now when it comes to The Last Kingdom.
‘The Last Kingdom’ has been renewed for season 5
Variety reports that the series is getting a fifth season with Netflix. In total, it will consist of 10 episodes, which is the usual for the series. Fans will have plenty of time to reacquaint themselves with the characters again in season 5.
In a sweet way to announce the news to cast members, Alexander Dreymon, who plays Uhtred, told his co-stars the exciting news over a video call that was posted to the show’s official Instagram and Twitter pages. The stars of the series seem super excited about the information, which was revealed in separate video calls.
What will season 5 be about?
As can be expected, the television series will continue to be based on Bernard Cornwell’s wildly popular novels of the same name. Season 5 will be focused on books nine and 10, which are The Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer. There are actually 13 novels in total, so there is hope that the series will continue after season 5.
Here’s the official synopsis for the new season via Winter Is Coming: “Based on books nine and 10 – The Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer – the fifth installment will see Uhtred realize his destiny is more than just Bebbanburg: it is tied to the future of England itself. Charged with training King Edward’s first-born son Aethelstan as a warrior, Uhtred’s ambition will have an even higher purpose. But to achieve this destiny, Uhtred will have to face down his greatest enemy and suffer his greatest loss.”
When will filming start for season 5?
Radio Times reports that in their Q&A with Alexander Dreymon and Bernard Cornwell for the release of Cornwell’s 13th book in the series, War Lord, Dreymon revealed when filming is likely to take place, and it’s happening sooner than fans may believe. It’s supposed to start before the end of 2020 in Hungary, which is an exciting prospect.
Of course, production will follow “very strict” guidelines when it comes to the coronavirus (COVID-19), as can be expected. “We’re going to start shooting towards the end of this year under very strict COVID-19 guidelines, of course,” Dreymon revealed. “We’re very lucky to be able to work at the moment.”
Dreymon also mentions Uhtred’s age, which seems to be a “problem” now since he is supposed to be so much older than the actor who plays him. Dreymon himself is only 37-years-old, so making him age decades for the next season will be a challenge.
“I think he starts at 54 and ends up at 60 in the books,” Dreymon explains. “That’s a problem right now because how do we make it look like Uhtred has aged without it looking comical? We’re working on it.”
Fans can’t wait to see more of Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred and all their other favorite characters once again when season 5 is finally released.
