‘The Lion King’ 2019 Cast: Who Will Voice Scar?
Disney fans are gearing up for a full year of big movie releases — everything from new Marvel movies to a Frozen sequel. One of the most anticipated films of the year is one of three classic animated film remakes coming to theaters in 2019.
The Lion King is still a fan favorite, and it’s always worrisome when new actors step into beloved roles. But it looks like Simba and company are in good hands.
Here’s everything we know about the 2019 Lion King remake — including similarities to and differences from the original film, who will be returning from the original 1994 film voice cast, and which award-winning actor will portray Simba’s villainous uncle Scar.
The Lion King remake: Everything we know so far
From the trailer, we can easily point out the visual similarities between the original 1994 film and the upcoming 2019 remake.
Familiar characters like Simba and Rafiki closely resemble their original imagery, and from what we can hear, Mufasa is still the wise king we love and are really not looking forward to saying goodbye to all over again.
We do know there will be at least one new character added to the remake that did not appear in the original film, though we don’t know how significant their addition will be to the larger plot of the film.
Additionally, we know that the movie isn’t technically strictly live action, but a live action/CGI hybrid called live-action animation. Motion capture technology records actors’ movements and facial expressions as they perform their lines, which are then used to more realistically animate each character.
The Lion King 2019 cast: Which original cast member will return?
Legendary voice actor James Earl Jones is the only member of the original cast reprising his role in the 2019 film. He will return as Mufasa — Scar’s brother, Simba’s dad, and the king of the pride lands. That’s his voice in the trailer — but you probably already knew that.
Joining him in the film are a collection of voices you might actually recognize, thanks to Disney’s selection of well-known actors to portray fan-favorite lions, meerkats, and warthogs.
Donald Glover and Beyoncé will lend their voices to Simba and Nala, the film’s two major protagonists. John Oliver of Last Week Tonight fame will voice Zazu.
Who will voice Scar in the new Lion King?
If you’re not familiar with the story (or need a brief refresher), Scar is the power-hungry Claudius of the film (Hamlet’s uncle in the Shakespeare play the movie shares many similarities with). In seeking the throne, Scar rids the kingdom of both king and heir so he can rule the lands.
In the original 1994 film, Scar was voiced by Jeremy Irons, an Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning actor who is still active in film and television today. But he will not be reprising his original role in the new film.
Instead, award-winning actor Chiwetel Ejiofor will voice the movie’s main villain. Ejiofor is best known for portraying Solomon Northup in the 2013 film 12 Years a Slave. He was nominated for an Academy Award and won many others for this role.
The first-ever remake of The Lion King comes to theaters on July 19, 2019.
