‘The Lion King’ 2019 Cast: Who Will Voice Timon and Pumbaa?
Though The Lion King is the third in a sequence of classic Disney live-action remakes roaring into theaters in 2019, it’s probably the one fans are itching to see the most.
Many are wary (or casually curious) of Will Smith’s role in Aladdin since he’ll be taking over the role the late Robin Williams likely would have secured. Dumbo is one of Disney’s oldest animated films, and a remake or sequel has never been made before.
But The Lion King came out during the Disney Renaissance — and is considered to be one of the studio’s most popular animated films of all time. New voices are headed to the remake, but they seem to have been chosen carefully.
Disney recruited two fairly well-known celebrities to voice main characters Simba and Nala. You might also recognize the voices of iconic duo Timon and Pumbaa.
Who voiced Timon and Pumbaa in the original Lion King?
Nathan Lane originally voiced Timon, the fast-talking, sarcastic meerkat. Lane is best known for his role in The Producers (2005). He is also a Tony award-winning Broadway performer.
His sidekick Pumbaa was originally voiced by Ernie Sabella. The actor also voiced Pumbaa in the Lion King sequels and Disney’s The Lion Guard, a 2016 animated TV series about Simba’s son.
Though it won’t be quite the same without these two iconic voices breathing life into these characters, Disney’s “new recruits” will create their own versions of the meerkat-warthog team.
Who will voice Timon in the Lion King remake?
Billy Eichner will provide the voice for Timon the meerkat.
You might recognize Eichner from Bob’s Burgers, American Horror Story, or Parks and Recreation.

Who will voice Pumbaa?
The beloved warthog Pumbaa will be voiced by Seth Rogen.
Rogen is an actor, producer, writer, and comedian. In terms of voiceover work, he is best known for his roles in The Simpsons and American Dad!
He started doing stand-up comedy at a young age and has gone on to write, act in, and direct a number of projects over the span of his career.
We have yet to hear or see Timon or Pumbaa in any photos or teasers Disney has released so far. The teaser trailer released on Thanksgiving 2018 does feature one iconic voice that’s hard to miss, however.
The Lion King 2019 cast: The original cast member returning for the remake
Donald Glover (Community, Atlanta) will lend his voice to Simba, the heir to the kingdom driven away by his uncle Scar. Glover produces and performs music under the name Childish Gambino, so he’ll most likely be singing, too.
Beyoncé will play Nala, who played a key role in Simba’s journey throughout the original film and will once again serve as the main character’s love interest.
John Oliver (Last Week Tonight) will voice Zazu, Mufasa’s political advisor.
James Earl Jones will reprise his role as Mufasa. He is the only cast member from the original film to make a grand return for the remake.
