‘The Lion King’ Remake Has Just Surpassed this Disney Hit for Highest-Grossing Animated Film
Disney’s latest live-action remake, The Lion King, has just taken its place on the throne, specifically the throne of “Highest-Grossing Animated Film of All Time” as of August 2019.
The film has been in theaters since early July and it has already beat its own source material, the original The Lion King from 1994, at the box office. The film is the next in a long line of Disney “live-action” remakes, which started with Alice in Wonderland and will soon be followed by Lady and the Tramp. Disney’s The Lion King has grossed insane numbers at the box office, without adjusting for inflation, and in doing so, defeated one of Disney’s most popular animated features in a box office showdown.
Whether they’ll let it go any time soon remains to be seen.
Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ overthrows ‘Frozen’ at the box office
Box Office Mojo reports that The Lion King has an international gross of roughly $1.3 billion, beating Frozen’s $1.2 billion. And the numbers are still rising.
This legendary feat also makes The Lion King the most successful, highest-grossing Disney remake to date, surpassing Dumbo, Aladdin, The Jungle Book, and the other live-action editions of our beloved Disney classics. The film’s success can be largely attributed to its performance on an international basis. The film grossed a little over $473 million domestically, leaving it running behind Finding Dory and The Incredibles 2.
These statistics also place The Lion King as No.12 on Box Office Mojo’s list of Highest-Grossing Films of All Time. If the film manages to surpass Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Black Panther, it will earn its way into the top 10.
The king has returned
The Lion King features an all-star cast, including Donald Glover, Beyoncé, James Earl Jones (reprising his role as Mufasa), Seth Rogen, Eric Andre, John Oliver, and more. The film follows directly in the footsteps of the 1994 original in almost every sense except for a more realistic animation style and the addition of a few new characters and songs.
The timeless story of a young lion fighting for his rightful place on the throne has attracted a large audience, but the question is whether or not the film has the power to make them stay. The animals’ lack of expression and the fact that the film takes very few chances left many viewers, critics and fans alike, feeling disappointed.
Will there be a rematch?
Frozen may have a chance to reclaim its title as “Highest-Grossing Animated Film of All Time” once its sequel is released in November. Frozen 2 is already generating a lot of excitement among Disney fans and we still have three months to go before it hits theaters. The film revolves around a new adventure where Elsa, Anna, and the gang go searching for the source of Elsa’s ice powers to save the kingdom of Arendelle.
The showdown is on between these two clashing kingdoms, but for now, The Lion King live-action remake won’t have to wait to take its place on the “Highest-Grossing” throne.
