‘The Little Mermaid’: Everything We Know About the Live-Action Adaptation’s Casting
A live-action version of The Little Mermaid officially has the green light. While the notion of an adaptation was thrown out back in 2015, it never got completely off the ground. Four years later, things are coming together brilliantly. Halle Bailey has officially been tapped to play Ariel. While the film is still in pre-production, some casting decisions have been made. The cast might not be completely filled out just yet, but fans have their own ideas on who should be cast in the principal roles.
Melissa McCarthy is rumored to be playing Ursula
Melissa McCarthy is allegedly in talks to play Ursula. While some fans are thrilled with the idea of McCarthy taking on the role, other ideas have been floated around on Twitter. A lot of people like the idea of Lizzo playing the iconic sea villain. In fact, Lizzo seems to be jockeying pretty hard for the position. The rapper and actress posted a video to Twitter proving that she will forever be Ursula, regardless of who Disney chooses to cast.
Some fans have another idea, though. One Twitter user noted that Guy Fieri would make an incredibly Ursula. After all, he already has the hair. Fieri doesn’t seem like he’s against the notion, either. Regardless of what fans want, it looks like McCarthy will be the sea villain, and she’ll surely give the role her all.
Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay are in talks to join the cast
Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay are both allegedly in talks to join the cast, according to Deadline. The actress is rumored to be joining the cast as Scuttle. Awkwafina is best known for her role in Crazy Rich Asians. Scuttle is the seagull that befriends Ariel.
Tremblay, allegedly, has been tapped for the role of Flounder. Flounder is Ariel’s very best fish friend. There is no word on who has been tapped to play the iconic Sebastian role, although fans have been throwing names out all-over social media.
Who will play King Triton?
Rumors about who will be playing King Triton haven’t hit the mainstream media just yet, but there are a few celebrities who are jockeying hard for the role. Terry Crews appears to be campaigning for the role pretty hard.
According to Cinema Blend, Crews posted a photoshopped snapshot of himself as a merman to Twitter. Fans are completely onboard with the idea. After all, Crews would work well with the Halle Bailey casting.
The people have spoken for their choice of Prince Eric
Prince Eric is almost as crucial as Ariel in the movie’s live-action adaptation. While no casting decision has been made public, the Twitter-verse thinks Noah Centineo would make a perfect Prince Eric, according to Bustle. Centineo rocketed to fame after the Netflix original flick To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.
Nyle DiMarco, the model who won cycle 22 of America’s Next Top Model, threw his hat into the ring. DiMarco took to Twitter to let fans know he was ready and waiting for a call from the casting department. Fans, however, have thrown everyone from Alex Landi to Harry Styles into the casting ring. Whoever ends up being Prince Eric, however, is going to have big shoes to fill.
