‘The Little Mermaid’: Queen Latifah Confirms She’s Been Cast as Ursula

It’s the age of The Little Mermaid. Not only is a remake of the film coming to theatres, but Disney is also doing a live concert production to mark the 30th anniversary of the movie.

The musical will air on November 5th and will “take viewers on a magical adventure under the sea as live musical performances by a star-studded cast will be interwoven into the broadcast of the original feature film,” according to a press release from ABC.

“This never-before-seen hybrid format will feature beautifully intricate sets and costumes, with music from the original animated film and the Tony Award-winning Broadway stage version.”

Who has been cast?

The Little Mermaid has had a lot of casting drama surrounding the choices made for the film remake, which is expected to begin production in 2020, so fans were waiting to see who Disney would cast in this musical remake.

Auli’i Cravalho will play Ariel. You may recognize her as the voice of Moana in the 2016 movie.

Yesterday, she took to Instagram to share the news with her fans.

“From ‘Beyond the Reef’ to ‘Under the Sea’!!!!” she wrote. “I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS PROJECT YOU HAVE NO IDEA AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Singer Shaggy has been cast to play Ariel’s sidekick Sebastian.

“Excited to be a part of it!!” he wrote on his own Instagram. “Thanx to the guys at ABC networks and the wonderful world of Disney for the opportunity!”

And lastly, Queen Latifah has been cast to reprise the role of Ursula.

“Fortunately I know a little magic,” she captioned a photo of herself as Ursula. “Excited to be a part of The Wonderful World of Disney Presents The Little Mermaid Live!”

Fan reactions

So far, fans have been excited about the casting choices for the upcoming television event.

“I love Queen Latifah as the choice for Ursula but I have no faith in this Little Mermaid remake,” one fan tweeted.

“Y’all can be mad abt Halle Bailey being the Live-Action ‘Little Mermaid’ but I was gonna be mad if Queen Latifah didn’t play Ursula,” another person wrote. “But she is, so, carry on.”

And some people turned their sights onto who should play the rest of the characters.

“So Halle is the little mermaid,” one fan tweeted. “Queen Latifah is Ursula. Listen, God now here me out…. I just need Idris Elba to play the King.”

“Dear Disney, please cast a beautiful chocolate man as Eric for ‘The Little Mermaid,'” another person wrote. “Thanks.”

Harry Styles has been a top pick to play Prince Eric.

“According to my calculations Harry’s covered in a towel which might mean that he did sumn with the water which also makes me wonder if he’s actually shooting for The Little Mermaid and maybe he shot for the scene where Ariel saves Eric,” one person tweeted, referencing a video of Styles in a towel.

But some people have had other hopes.

“So is Harry Styles really going to be the Prince Eric for Little Mermaid?” one fan wrote. “I just can’t accept this knowing Jackson Wang exists.

We’ll have to wait and see who ABC and Disney pick for the remaining roles.
