‘The Man’ Is Coming: Every Hint Taylor Swift Dropped That It Would Be the Next ‘Lover’ Single
Let’s just say that Taylor Swift has had a busy month. She hasn’t been posting much on social media, but the superstar has spent quite a bit more time in the public eye. She attended the Golden Globes with boyfriend Joe Alwyn, and she followed that up by going to Sundance for the premiere of her documentary.
Miss Americana is a film about the singer’s life over the past few years as directed by Lana Wilson. It premiered on the festival’s opening night, Jan. 23, 2020, and was met with an incredible response. But the next day, even bigger news regarding a new single and the upcoming Grammys came out.
Taylor Swift’s fourth ‘Lover’ single
Back up a bit, Swift released “Me!” as the first single off Lover in April 2019. This was followed by “You Need to Calm Down” in June and “The Archer” in July. However, the latter was considered only a promotional single. Finally, the title track “Lover,” was released as a single in August, the day before the full album dropped.
Swift has maintained that she was interested in releasing more singles. She even spoke with a fan about this at the Cats premiere. And now, it’s being reported that track No. 3, “The Man,” will be her fourth single off of Lover. But many of her fans aren’t surprised.
‘The Man’ has been heard at the Golden Globes and more
Swift is known for dropping plenty of hints about her upcoming singles. Easter eggs are basically her calling card. When she opened her 2019 American Music Awards medley with “The Man,” many thought it was simply a timed response to her feud with Scooter Braun and Big Machine Records. But perhaps it was more.
The artist has also played the song at other performances, including her NPR Tiny Desk concert and her City of Lover concert in Paris. And others could even be in on it — after all, “The Man” was played during the red carpet prior to the 2020 Golden Globe Awards.
Swift has emphasized its importance in interviews
This time, it’s not just about reputation. Swift has done a lot of press for Lover, including revealing insights about each of the songs on the album. “The Man,” which explains some of her struggles as a woman in the music industry (and the world in general), has been a big talking point.
Back in December, she told Billboard of the song that she wanted it to “get stuck in people’s heads, [so] they would end up with a song about gender inequality stuck in their heads.” This certainly sounds to us like an indication that she was leaning towards it as a single.
The Grammys controversy made it even more apparent
What’s more, Swift really believes in the message of her song. This became very apparent on Jan. 24, 2020. This was the day after her documentary premiered, the day “The Man” was essentially confirmed as a single, and the day the artist was revealed to not be attending the Grammys just a few days later.
Why isn’t Swift going? There are a number of possibilities, but according to Variety, it could have something to do with talk of sexism at the awards show made by recently ousted CEO Deborah Dugan. Swift was even thought to be performing “The Man” on that stage. Clearly, the singer wants to stand behind her song and its significant lyrics, so what better time to release it as a single?
