‘The Martian:’ Another Space Movie Hit Starring Matt Damon?
Matt Damon is heading to space for the second year in a row. After making an appearance in 2014’s Interstellar, the actor is once again leaving Earth in the upcoming sci-fi film The Martian. Though details about the project have been kept mostly under wraps for some time, audiences are now finally getting their first glimpse at the star-studded movie in a newly released trailer.
Based on Andy Weir’s best-selling 2011 novel of the same name, The Martian stars Damon as astronaut Mark Watney, who’s left on the surface of Mars when the rest of the crew presumes him dead after a massive storm. As the other crewmates return to Earth, Watney finds himself abandoned and alone. He must rely on his wit, spirit, and the few supplies he has left in order to survive and try to find a way to signal back to Earth for help. The movie is directed by prolific filmmaker Ridley Scott (Prometheus).
In addition to Damon, the space flick also features a whole slew of big names. Michael Peña stars as pilot Rick Martinez, while Jessica Chastain portrays commander Melissa Lewis and Sebastian Stay plays Dr. Chris Beck. Meanwhile, Aksel Hennie stas as Alex Vogel and Kate Mara plays computer expert Beth Johanssen. Kristin Wiig, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels, Donald Glover, Sean Bean, and Mackenzie Davis also co-star.
The trailer shows as the spacecraft is caught in a storm, during which –as Daniels’ character explains in a press conference – Watney apparently dies. But we quickly find out that’s not the case, as the astronaut is shown waking up in his spacesuit on the planet’s surface. The clip then shows as Watney records a video message explaining his predicament, in hopes that it will eventually find its way to NASA.
“I have no way to contact NASA or my crew mates, but even if I could, it would take four years for another manned mission to reach me and I’m in craft designed to last 31 days. So in the face of overwhelming odds, I only have one option: I’m gonna have to science the sh*t out of this thing,” Damon’s character says in the trailer, later adding, “It’s space. It doesn’t cooperate.”
The official trailer comes just a day after a three-minute promo clip (seen above) for the film dropped online. That video, shot in the style of a NASA video diary, had a funnier and more lighthearted feel, capturing Watney introducing some of the members of his crew to the general public only hours before they set out on their on the mission. In the viral clip, Watney drops some swear words and banters with the rest of the crew members. The “live stream” also featured fictitious silly tweets from the crew, alongside fun crew facts and trending alerts.
The full-length trailer boasts a much more serious tone than the promo teaser, suggesting the film is, first and foremost, a survival drama, but with comedic elements. With its promised mix of action and adventure, an all-star ensemble cast, and an acclaimed director like Scott at the wheel, it looks like the movie will make for one truly can’t-miss space epic.
The Martian is set to hit theaters on November 25.
