‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Creator Calls the Amazon Series a ‘Family Show’
If you’ve seen The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, (or perhaps even if you haven’t), you’ll know it’s about one thing in particular: Mrs. Maisel. However, according to the creators of the Emmy-winning Amazon series, their goal in storytelling is not just to share what Midge is going through; they believe that Maisel is a “family show” at its core.
Why ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ co-creators believe the Amazon series is really a ‘family show’
In an interview with Variety, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel co-creators explained their original vision of the Amazon series about a 1950s-era female comedian. Amy Sherman-Palladino shared:
The journey of success we’re trying to keep as real as possible because standup was a different animal back then — there wasn’t [much] TV so standups worked clubs and it was a longer road to make your bones back then, and make your name.
However, the overarching narrative the Maisel writers wanted to delve into had less to do with the art form of comedy and more to do with Midge’s interpersonal relationships.
“It’s less about success and more about how solid she is as a performer — [and] what is that doing to her and what is it doing to her family,” Sherman-Palladino continued.
As her husband and creative partner Daniel Palladino added, the show’s title can even be a bit misleading.
“Our prime thing is always the story — where is the story going and that all of the characters are represented,” he told Variety. “The show is called The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel but we consider this more of a family show than a show that is solely about a standup comedian.”
How lead cast member Rachel Brosnahan is affected by playing the main character Midge
Rachel Brosnahan, the actor who plays Midge, spoke to Gold Derby in August 2020 about what it was like to work on the past 3 seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The interviewer wondered: when it came to “playing such a vivid character who is so unique and specific in what she wants, needs and desires,” does Brosnahan find herself emulating any of these qualities in her real life?
One thing came to mind immediately for the actor.
“I think I maybe talk a little faster in my real life after I spent a few years playing Midge,” Brosnahan shared. Aside from the speed of her speech, what else has The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star picked up from the character? Brosnahan told Gold Derby:
… I really admire her confidence. I admire how willing she is to leap into a brand new situation. She doesn’t know how to do anything at less than 150 and I’ve definitely tried to borrow a little piece of that into my own life, for sure.
What will happen in ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Season 4?
While COVID-19 has put a lot of show’s filming schedules on hiatus, what does Brosnahan expect from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4?
“Technology is amazing,” she told Gold Derby. I feel like there may be some very creative solutions to help keep what makes our show so special alive.”
The Maisel star admitted she’s super “curious to see what the smart people come up with.” As are we!
