‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’: Did Emmy Nominee, Rachel Brosnahan Ever Do Standup Before the Show?
Did she ever do standup before the show? This is the answer and more to know about this year’s Emmy race.
Rachel Brosnahan’s character plays a standup comedian
Brosnahan plays Miriam ‘Midge’ Maisel who goes from a housewife to a standup comedian. We see Midge be a natural on the stage, but also work hard at starting her career.
The character is also a mother of two children. Some fans criticized the fact that the fictional mother is never seen parenting. One even called Midge a “terrible” mother.
Brosnahan tweeted in response, “Absolutely. I’m not sure I would go as far as terrible, however she’s certainly not winning ‘parent of the year.’ But it also doesn’t change the fact that this was not one of the primary criticisms of Don Draper or Walter White who were similarly, single-mindedly ambitious.”
What fans do see is Midge working on her standup material. It might make you wonder if the actress ever took the stage herself.
She is intimidated by the thought of comedy
The actress is far from a standup comedian. She talked about being intimidated by the idea of doing it with Variety.
“Yes, very, very much,” Brosnahan said. “I had never really done comedy, let alone standup — and man, I don’t know how those guys do it. It’s one of the bravest things I can possibly imagine.”
She continued, “I will never be that brave. Getting up in front of an audience like we do on our show has given me a taste of it — and those guys were paid to laugh at my jokes! So I had it a little bit easier.”
Brosnahan also didn’t take the stage to prepare for the role. “I would be so traumatized if I did my own stand up I would never be able to do it,” she admitted. “If you play a doctor on TV, you probably shouldn’t try performing surgery.”
Brosnahan could win an Emmy again this year
She is so convincing at the role that she won an Emmy and two Golden Globes for it.
This year she is nominated for an Emmy again for outstanding lead actress in a comedy. The other nominees are Christina Applegate for Dead To Me, Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Fleabag, Natasha Lyonne for Russian Doll, Catherine O’Hara for Schitt’s Creek, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep.
She has won before but this year’s competition is tough. Louis-Dreyfus might take the award given it’ll be the last time she can be nominated for Veep. The star of the HBO show has won seven times before for playing Selina Meyer.
However, Jane Lynch and Luke Kirby already won Emmys for their roles in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel this year.
