‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Star Rachel Brosnahan on Her Co-Star Alex Borstein: ‘Comedy is Just in Her Bones’

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel cast members Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein have both won Emmys for their acting on TV series. However, Brosnahan credits her co-star as the real comedy genius.

In a 2020 interview with Gold Derby, Brosnahan couldn’t stop raving about her Marvelous Mrs. Maisel co-star Borstein.

“Comedy is just in her bones,” she said. Everyone on the Amazon series set seems to agree. Brosnahan shared:

She can make something that wouldn’t be funny to anyone else on paper so funny that the whole crew is trying to stifle laughter while she’s shooting it.

The Gold Derby interviewer also praised Brosnahan’s on-screen chemistry with Borstein. Surprisingly, the 2 actors have never previously worked together in a film or TV show.

“We had a chemistry read early on in the process,” Brosnahan shared. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel actor remembered first encountering Borstein behind the scenes:

I think I had already been cast and Alex and I read once together and we had this immediate and very strange chemistry that I think works so well for Susie and Midge. We are so different but love each other very, very much. …I’m so in awe of the way that she moves through the world and it makes absolutely no sense and yet it works completely.

A big question that surrounds Borstein’s character is Susie’s sexuality.

“I mean, it’s never been something that’s been explicitly addressed on the show,” Brosnahan confirmed explained. However, she told Gold Derby that that issue is better left to the series co-creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino.

“So I think really, whatever that is to Susie is for Amy and Dan to know and for Alex to know,” the actor argued.

Apparently, she and Borstein have not discussed the matter at length, either.

“… it’s not really something that we’ve talked about or something that I feel particularly entitled to have an opinion on,” Brosnahan said. “I think all I can really go off of is what the show tells us about Susie.”

However, the 2 Marvelous Mrs. Maisel co-stars have spoken about their characters’ relationship, which is obviously very close.

“… we’ve definitely talked a lot about the relationship between Midge and Susie and how much their relationship has evolved over the last couple of seasons,” Brosnahan told Gold Derby.

What will happen between Midge and Susie in ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Season 4?

Susie and Midge’s working relationship and friendship has also evolved over the seasons, Brosnahan argued. She continued:

You know, they need each other. And by the end of Season 3, a difficult lesson that they’ve both learned in different ways is that they are each the only person that they can trust in this moment, in this business. They have a very intimate relationship, definitely. They’ve seen the ugliest sides of each other and not many other people in either of their lives have seen that.

The actor can’t wait to see what the Maisel creative team comes up with for Midge and Susie in season 4.

“… I’m looking forward to seeing how their relationship continues to develop and how we learn more about Susie moving forward,” she said.
