‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Upsets ‘Saturday Night Live’ In These Two Emmy Categories
Saturday Night Live seemed like a lock for the guest actor and actress categories. After all, the show had more nominees in the two categories than anyone else. In the Oustanding Guest Actor in a Comedy category, SNL was represented four times out of the seven nominees. The Oustanding Guest Actress in a Comedy category wasn’t much different. SNL was represented twice out of six nominees. Regardless of its nomination count, the famed late-night series was bested by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in both categories.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel upsets Saturday Night Live at the Creative Arts Emmys

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is shaping up to be the surprise darling of the 71st Emmy Awards, at least as far as the Creative Arts Emmy Awards go. The beloved Amazon Original is nominated for a plethora of awards, but few people assumed the series would dominate the guest role categories this year.
That’s precisely what happened, in any case. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel took home both guest acting in a comedy series prizes, upsetting Saturday Night Live in the process. The Oustanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series win went to Luke Kirby for his portrayal of Lenny Bruce. He beat out Matt Damon, Robert Deniro, John Mulaney, and Adam Sandler. All four actors were nominated for their work on Saturday Night Live. He also bested Peter MacNicol and Rufus Sewell. MacNicol was nominated for his guest spot on Veep, while Sewell received his nomination for his contribution to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Saturday Night Live is a regular in the Oustanding Guest Actor and Actress categories
While SNL failed to secure a win in either guest actor category this year, the series is a regular at the Emmy Awards. In fact, guest actors for the series have been nominated in the category every year for the last decade.
The series similarly dominates the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series category. Guest actresses for the series have also been nominated each year for the last decade. This year, Sandra Oh and Emma Thompson received nods from the Television Academy for their guest spots on the long-running series.
SNL guest actresses have taken home the prize for the last three years. In 2016, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler shared the accolade. In 2017, Melissa McCarthy received an Emmy for her work on the show, and in 2018 Tiffany Haddish secured a win in the category.
What other categories is The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel nominated in?
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel kicked off the Emmys with a few big wins at the Creative Arts Emmys, but the show is set to pick up several more major wins on Sept. 22. Most importantly, the show is nominated in the Outstanding Comedy Series category. The Amazon series will battle it out against Barry, Fleabag, Russian Doll, Schitt’s Creek, Veep, and The Good Place for the win. The series did take home the honor last year for its inaugural season.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is also nominated in the lead actress category, as well as in the supporting actor and actresses in a comedy series categories. Rachel Brosnahan is looking to pick up her second Emmy win in the lead actress category. She received the win last year but might struggle to continue her streak with the nomination of Julia Louis-Dreyfus for her role in Veep. Louis-Dreyfus has absolutely dominated the category during the show’s seven-season run.
