Singing competition shows have been popular ever since the first contestant took the stage on American Idol back in 2002. There’s something so compelling about watching amateurs battle it out to determine who has the most talent, and now there are so many singing shows it’s hard to keep track.
But the one no one can stop talking about is a very different type of voice competition. Instead of pitting regular people against one another, The Masked Singer on FOX is a “top secret competition show” where celebrities compete while dressed in elaborate costumes. Fans are left trying to decide who has the best voice and who is even participating.
Half the allure of The Masked Singer is uncovering the mystery of who’s part of the show. But there is one easy method to determine the identity of each competitor beneath the mask.
‘The Masked Singer’ is popular because we want to solve the riddle
The premise of The Masked Singer is a little ridiculous, but the truth is people just can’t look away from the spectacle. That’s because it’s human nature to want to solve any riddle. And when those mysteries involve singing celebrities? The need to know is even greater.
If this was just a singing competition show with celebrities, it wouldn’t be nearly as interesting. But as it stands, The Masked Singer dominates Wednesday nights in ratings.
All ‘Masked Singer’ competitors have 1 thing in common
Contestants on The Masked Singer have different talents and come from a variety of unique backgrounds. But one thing you can always count on? None of them will ever be more famous than the judges. If they were, the network would have asked them to sit on the panel of judges, not compete.
Remember, the judges are the only ones that FOX can advertise since every other Masked Singer participant must remain secret. Out of everyone signed up for the show, the judges will automatically be the most well-known celebrities. It just makes sense that way.
Who are the judges on ‘The Masked Singer?’
Right now, The Masked Singer includes a panel of judges comprised of actor-comedian Ken Jeong, television personality Jenny McCarthy, recording artist Nicole Scherzinger, and singer-songwriter Robin Thicke. Guest panelist judges for season 2 include Joel McHale, J.B. Smoove, and Kenan Thompson.
The show is hosted by actor, rapper, and producer Nick Cannon.
This season of ‘The Masked Singer’ is full of surprises
So far, we’ve discovered a few of The Masked Singer identities and all of them follow the theory that they’ll never be more famous than the judges.
Up first was Olympic figure skater Johny Weir (The Egg) in the season premiere. Week 2 revealed that The Ice Cream was professional gamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins. The Panda turned out to be Laila Ali, Muhammad Ali’s daughter. The Eagle was Drew Pinsky and The Skeleton was David Letterman’s former Late Show sidekick Paul Shaffer.
Who will be uncovered next? Fans have plenty of guesses for the rest of the season of this popular show. Just remember, none will likely be more famous than any of the judges, at least not in 2019.
Tune in to The Masked Singer and guess along every Wednesday night on FOX.
