The MCU Might Introduce X-Men’s Wolverine Via a Hulk vs. Wolverine Mash-Up
Ever since the Fox/Disney merger, fans have been relentlessly circling back to the same question: how will the MCU incorporate the X-Men and the Fantastic Four? With David Morrisey and Liam Neeson reportedly up for Galactus — the villain responsible for turning Norrin Radd into the Silver Surfer — and Viggo Mortensen allegedly in the running for Doctor Doom, fans and Marvel experts alike have begun prophecizing all the way’s the previously owed Fox entities could make their grand entrances.
While seeing any of the various X-Men battle alongside the Avengers would be a comic enthusiasts’ greatest pleasure, certain X-Men, undoubtedly, receive more attention than others. One of those X-Men is none other than Wolverine, previously portrayed by the incomparable Hugh Jackman.
While Hugh Jackman’s return is highly desirable, such a reprisal — following the character’s defining denouement — would feel largely out of place.
While technology can take away or add a few years — as the MCU sees fit — to align with any timeline of choice, technology can’t remove the emotional non-sequitur bound to result if Jackman returned following Logan. Thus, it should come as no surprise that the MCU is looking to cast a new character, and while the “who” in this equation remains largely unknown — relying on tidbits of credibly backed leaks — the “how” may be coming together.
Based on earlier reports from We Got This Covered, and more recent reports, Wolverine may enter the picture via the Incredible Hulk. And, since Mark Ruffalo is still in the picture, we may see our favorite grand beast take on one of the X-Men’s most formidable members.
What we know about a possible Wolverine and Hulk film in the MCU
Let’s dig into the distant past (a month ago), before getting into the more recent news. We Got This Covered announced, a little while back, that when Wolverine joined the MCU, he would eventually join the Avengers. At that point, a source close to the outlet confirmed that Marvel Studios would look at the comic books for inspiration, and find a way to get Wolverine in on the action with the Avengers.
Wolverine, in the comics, appears in Civil War, Secret Invasion, Seige, and more; however, up until recently, his character was out of reach. Considering some of his comic book involvements have already played out on screen, the MCU will have to look in a new direction. While it was initially believed that Wolverine would be introduced alongside fellow X-Men, he may just make a solo appearance in a Hulk-themed film first.
According to We Got This Covered, a Wolverine vs. Hulk movie is rumored to be on the horizon. Not to mention, discovering that Mark Ruffalo’s Incredible Hulk may appear in the She-Hulk series has led fans to presume that the actor is far from done with his journey as the character. While Ruffalo’s future involvement was a bit hazy following Endgame, his continued participation feels more likely with each passing day.
We Got This Covered has allegedly caught rumors of a Hulk vs. Wolverine movie, which could pave the future for Banner, and introduce a vital X-Men character all in one shot. Maybe Henry Cavill’s supposed meeting with Marvel was about Wolverine? We Got This Covered, citing Cosmic Book News, informed readers that the film would trace Banner on his journey to retrieve Weapon X (Wolverine).
The movie would theoretically pull on the Immortal Hulk series, presenting a much darker, transformed version of the character. While this wouldn’t match Professor Hulk, it would allow the Hulk to change in a way that doesn’t strip the character of his glorious smash and stomp moments. Will fans get Hulk back to form, but a bit different, and Wolverine all at once? Let’s buy tickets now.
