The Mean Thing Prince Philip Said About Regretting His Marriage to Queen Elizabeth

Prince Philip is known for speaking his mind no matter how controversial his opinions might be. This can be a good and a bad thing — on one hand, you never have to wonder how the man is feeling. But on the other side, it means he often comes out with some shockingly rude comments.

One of the most enduring relationships Prince Philip has is with Queen Elizabeth, his wife of more than 70 years. However, just because their relationship lasted for the long haul it doesn’t mean everything’s been perfect the whole time. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Prince Philip had to give up his dream career to marry Queen Elizabeth

Marry a royal family member inevitably comes with sacrifice. No matter what background the person comes from, adjusting to royal life takes a lot. Sometimes it even means giving up the life you thought you wanted.

Philip Mountbatten met Elizabeth when he was just 8 years old though they didn’t become close until years later. The handsome young military man caught her eye again while he was enrolled in the Royal Naval College. In 1946, Philip requested Elizabeth’s hand in marriage. Elizabeth’s father wasn’t a huge fan of the idea, but he relented to give his daughter away.

Philip’s proposal changed the trajectory of his life forever. If he hadn’t chosen to marry the future queen, there’s a good chance Prince Philip would have had an illustrious military career.

“Philip’s role as Consort is far from the role he would ideally have chosen, in the navy he would probably have risen high had not the King’s failing health forced him to terminate a promising career,” royal analyst Richard Fitzwilliams explained.

Does Prince Philip regret the choices he made?

The road less taken can look more appealing, but that’s not a nice thing to say to your wife. When asked how he generally felt about his life in 1992, he responded, “I’d much rather have stayed in the Navy, frankly.”

Does that mean he regrets his marriage and children? Well, snarky Prince Philip didn’t come out and say that explicitly. Still, based on actions and his reputation of being harsh and critical, it’s reasonable to believe that Prince Philip might fantasize about what might have been.

Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth have a unique relationship

Like so many married couples, the queen and her husband have worked out slightly unconventional ways of existing over the years. They currently maintain separate residences and consequently separate bedrooms, though they do see each other often.

Prince Philip chose to retire recently and hasn’t been seen making royal appearances like he used to. Still, the couple has body language and small gestures of affection that prove Prince Philip wasn’t serious when he made that rude comment about wishing he’d chosen a naval career instead of marrying his wife.

The grass is always greener on the other side. But marrying a British monarch? That’s usually a good decision. Prince Philip clearly made the right choice!
