The 10 Most Bankable Hollywood Stars of 2016
Being a movie star is a lucrative job, but some Hollywood names are safer bets than others. Case in point? Forbes has just released its annual list of the most bankable stars of the year, ranking actors by their total estimated compensation versus the box office income for their last three movies prior to June 2016.
So which actors topped the list? Below, check out the 10 Hollywood stars who delivered the most bang for the studio’s buck this year. Note: Forbes doesn’t include animated films, movies where the actor appeared in a very small role, or movies that were released on fewer than 2,000 screens.
10. Jennifer Lawrence
Lawrence may earn a big paycheck, but she balanced it out this year with two huge-earning blockbusters: X-Men: Apocalypse and Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part II. The success of the latest installments in those action franchises not only helped lift her average return, it also helped make up for the unimpressive performance of the biographical film, Joy. She currently returns $17.70 for every $1 paid.
9. Matt Damon
The actor’s box office returns were boosted by last year’s stellar The Martian, which earned both rave reviews and raked in $630 million in theaters. The performance of the Oscar-nominated movie helped Damon gross an average of $17.70 for every $1 paid.
8. Robert Downey Jr.
Downey’s The Judge wasn’t a strong performer at the box office. Luckily, the actor also has another role you may have heard of: Iron Man in Marvel’s various ensemble movies. Thanks to his part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the actor is the eighth most bankable star of the year, bringing in $18.40 for every $1 paid. He’s also one of four Marvel stars on this list.
7. Ben Affleck
Affleck has one very good reason for landing within the top 10 most bankable actors: Batman. Thanks mostly to the high-grossing (if critically panned) Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, the new Dark Knight is delivering strong ticket sales at movies theaters. He rakes in an average of $20.10 for every $1 paid.
6. Jennifer Aniston
Mother’s Day wasn’t Aniston’s best film, either critically or commercially. But her past films have done well enough that she still maintains a solid average return at the box office. Per Forbes, the actress is currently earning about $27.80 for every $1 paid.
5. Vin Diesel
Last year’s The Last Witch Hunter proved to be a commercial disappointment for Diesel, grossing just $147 million on a $90 million production budget. Despite that, the actor maintained a healthy return ratio this year, largely due to the hugely profitable Furious 7. With the action franchise still raking in the big bucks, Diesel’s current average box office return is $32 for every $1 paid.
4. Mila Kunis
Not all of Kunis’s recent movies have been hits. Case in point: 2015’s disastrous Jupiter Ascending. In spite of the costly flop, Kunis has proven to be one of Hollywood’s safer bets. The actress — who scored another hit this summer with the R-rated comedy, Bad Moms — also delivers a healthy return at the box office. She brings in an average of $49.50 for every $1 paid.
3. Scarlett Johansson
Between her recurring role as Black Widow and her successful solo efforts outside of the MCU (Lucy), it’s no surprise that Johansson is among Hollywood’s most bankable stars this year. Per Forbes, the box office total for the actress’s last three films (not including animated films) is close to $2.4 billion. Her pay makes up just a little over 1% of that, putting her average return at $88.60 for every $1 paid.
2. Chris Pratt
Pratt earned comparatively low pay for his starring roles in the hit blockbuster franchises, Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy, since he negotiated those deals long before those movies hit the big-screen. The hugely successful films have now translated into impressive returns for the star, who garners $125.40 for every $1 paid. That makes him the second most bankable star of 2016.
1. Chris Evans
Captain America comes to the rescue again — the box office’s rescue, that is. For the second year in a row, the Marvel actor tops the list of Hollywood stars that deliver the most bang for their buck. According to Forbes, Evans earns $135.80 for every $1 paid — a formidable return that he can owe to his role as the MCU’s Steve Rogers, a role he reprised in this year’s monster blockbuster Captain America: Civil War.
