The 3 Most Binge-Worthy Original Shows on Hulu Right Now

Hulu has come quite a long way since their website launch in 2007. What used to be the go-to streaming service for television you missed the night before, has now become a top place to find new original shows and movies to binge-watch. The service began expanding to original scripted content in 2012 and they have only grown since.

In 2017, Hulu did something no other streaming service has done before. They won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series (scroll below to see which one). They also have many other critically acclaimed shows stacking up on the must-watch list. Let’s jump right in and see which three shows on Hulu are the most binge-worthy right now.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’: Shocking at every turn, but you won’t be able to look away

The Handmaid’s Tale is a series based on a literary bestseller by Margaret Atwood. It is set in a dystopian world where women have been stripped of all rights, even basic ones. In the series, a new government is formed, called Gilead, based on an extremist version of the Bible.

In Gilead, the birth rate has plummeted, so fertile women are forced to become handmaids who are ritualistically raped as they serve as surrogates to the elite. Once you get over the initial shock of it all, you see that it is truly a gripping story of female perseverance and strength.

Elisabeth Moss, who plays the main character, Offred, won the 2018 Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series. In its first season alone, the series won eight Primetime Emmy Awards from 13 nominations, including the previously mentioned Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series.

There are currently 3 seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale streaming on Hulu for you to binge-watch.

‘Harlots’ all-female creative team portrays prostitution from ‘the female gaze’

Harlots takes place in 18th century Georgian London and centers around two warring brothels. The main character and brothel owner, Margaret Wells, is played by Samantha Morton. The first season depicts her struggles to raise her two daughters in this difficult time period while battling her former boss.

The show challenges viewers to view sex as simply a transaction. We see murder, blackmail, seduction and spies, but underneath it all, is a story about women fighting for safety and comfort in a world where they are denied both.

The creators of Harlots purposely set out to assemble a show that is entirely written and directed by women. Executive producer Alison Owen explained to the Hollywood Reporter, “It was very important to us from the beginning to make it about the female gaze. We were determined to make something different.”

Margaret Wells’ nemesis, Lydia Quigley, is played by Oscar-nominated actor Leslie Manville. Other notable actors include Liv Tyler, who joined the cast in the second season as Lady Isabella Fitzwilliam, and Game of Thrones star, Alfie Allen, who joins the show in the third season as Isaac Pincher.

The third season of Harlots began streaming on Hulu on July 10. There are two full seasons for you to catch up on before you begin season 3.

‘Castle Rock’ pulls in various Stephen King characters and references with a brand new plot

Castle Rock is a sci-fi thriller of a series based on the stories of Stephen King. The first season takes place in and around the prison from The Shawshank Redemption. The psychological horror series begins with an anonymous phone call that lures a death-row attorney, Henry Deaver, back to his hometown, Castle Rock

Many King characters from previous productions are brought back for this anthology tribute act. However, previous King knowledge is not a requirement for watching. Sissy Spacek who starred in King’s Carrie and Bill Skarsgård who starred in It are two of the show’s main stars.

Although the show is set in King’s fictional town and has many connections to past parts of King’s universe, it is a completely new storyline. Dustin Thomason and Sam Shaw produce this horrific masterpiece with King’s blessings to include tidbits from his previous work.

Castle Rock has recently been nominated for an Emmy in Outstanding Original Main Title Music.

As an anthology series, the mystery of Deaver and why he returns is wrapped up at the end of the first season. Another story will be featured in season 2 which is set to air in late 2019.

If you are looking for something new to binge-watch, Hulu has you covered with these three original shows.
