The 10 Most Popular Halloween Costumes of 2016

It can be tough shopping around for a Halloween costume. You want to dress to impress, but pop culture often affects everyone’s decisions. If there was a popular movie or series of events that happened that year, then it could lead to everyone getting the same idea for a costume. We looked into the trends last year so how much did they change this year?

Well at the end of 2015 we got Star Wars: The Force Awakens, everyone has been scared of people dressing as clowns, and we got a very different looking Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. But did any of this have an impact on this year’s most popular Halloween costumes? It’s time to find out! Here are the most popular Halloween costumes of 2016 based on trends from Google.

10. Dinosaur

Jurassic World came out last year so perhaps this is a ripple effect into this year. But the dinosaur is also at the bottom of this most popular costumes list. This costume has definitely seen an increase, since it didn’t break the top 10 last year. When you search for a dinosaur costume in Google you’ll come across some cute costumes for kids. But then there are also those adult costumes that fall into the Jurassic World theme, like the inflatable T-Rex costume.

This choice might be cool, but it definitely takes preparation. Also, the fact that inflatable costumes are impressive to look at, might be clouding the reality that it takes up a lot of room. It also makes drinking and partying a little harder if your face is covered. Either way, dinosaurs are making a huge comeback!

9. Clown

Hate clowns? Well you might want to stay inside during Halloween this year. You can thank this costume trend to the clown hoax and reported sightings of clowns trying to lure children in the woods this year. There is also some buzz around the upcoming remake of It. The new look of Pennywise has already been released so it is possible that people will dress up as the horror villain this year.

8. Star Wars

The franchise has always been a popular source for Halloween costumes. Now that The Force Awakens premiered, with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story coming out later this year, it looks like the trend will continue. However, the popularity around the series has slid from number five last year to number eight this year. Perhaps it will climb back up next year after the release of the new movie.

7. Batman

Ben Affleck

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice | Warner Bros.

This is probably not that much of a surprise since Batman had a big year this year with the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Although it wasn’t a hit with critics and some fans, it still pushed the iconic character to the forefront of many people’s minds. The character also got a small part in Suicide Squad earlier this year. So if you want to go as a superhero you might want to look elsewhere so you’re not one of many Batmans.

6. Witch

Hocus Pocus

How the mighty have fallen! Witch was the number one costume for adults last year, and now it is number six. The witch is always a popular costume because it is such an easy thing to put together last minute. But the shinier, newer costume ideas this year have pushed it down the list.

5. Wonder Woman

Like Batman, Wonder Woman has also had a big year. She had a role in Batman v Superman, and had a trailer released for her upcoming movie, Wonder Woman. Many are therefore taking on her costume. Definitely keep this in mind if you were thinking about dressing as a superhero this year.

4. Pirate

Like the witch, the pirate is a pretty popular costume because it is easy to put together with things you already own. Last year it was at number six on the list of most popular costumes so it has crept up. Perhaps this is because there has been buzz around the new installment of Pirates of the Caribbean.

3. Superhero

Captain America: Civil War

Everywhere you turn there is a superhero story being told, so it only makes sense that they will be all over the place on Halloween. If you want to be unique perhaps you should dress up as one of the minor characters that help the superheroes. Either way, prepare yourself to be surrounded by The Avengers, Justice League, and more this year.

2. Joker

Jared Leto in Suicide Squad

There aren’t many fans that liked Jared Leto’s take on the Joker in Suicide Squad. But in the end, it is the different look for the character that many fans will probably want to try. So it’s not that surprising that you’ll see many people dress like the insane villain this year. It also makes half of a very interesting couple’s costume.

1. Harley Quinn

Everyone saw this coming! Suicide Squad was pretty much torn apart by critics and some fans. Everything was scrutinized down to Harley Quinn’s outfit for the movie. But despite that, the movie inspired hundreds of makeup tutorials and cosplayers to recreate the messy look. It was pretty much a given that this would be the most popular Halloween costume of the year.
