The New Obi-Wan Kenobi Series on Disney+—Which Is Not Canceled—Will Explain Everything About Force Ghosts

Now that The Mandalorian concluded its first season on Dec. 27, 2019, fans want to know what’s next for Star Wars. We can’t expect another movie after The Rise of Skywalker for about three years. However, Disney+ is planning a new series surrounding Obi-Wan Kenobi. Let’s take a look at what we can expect from the series and how it will explain everything you need to know about Force ghosts.

Here are the basics surrounding the ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi Series’ on Disney+

Ewan McGregor will reprise his role from 15 years ago as the fan-favorite Obi-Wan Kenobi. The president of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, announced at the 2019 D23 Expo that the scripts for the series are written. The filming will begin in the summer of 2020, but the only other information we know comes straight from McGregor.

Brief rumors that began on Jan. 15, 2020 that indicated the show was canceled, are now squashed, according to The Wrap.

“It will be interesting to take a character we know in a way and show him,” McGregor explained to Men’s Journal. “Well, his arc will be quite interesting, I think, dealing with that the fact that all the Jedi were slaughtered with the end of Episode III. It’s quite something to get over.”

He is excited to get back into his old character, although he is 15 years older. He feels as though the time will be on his side since he was so young when he played Obi-Wan the first time.

“I want to get closer and closer to how Obi-Wan felt while Alec Guinness was playing him,” the actor continued. “I feel like I’m grayer and nearer him in age, so it’ll be easier to do that.”

McGregor also told the magazine that the first season would feature six- one-hour long episodes.

What are Force ghosts, and when did we see them last in the ‘Star Wars’ movies?

In the film, Star Wars: A New Hope, Qui-Gon Jinn appears to Obi-Wan as a Force Ghost. The spirit guides Yoda and Obi-Wan in the secret of retaining one’s individuality after becoming one with the Force.

“The Force ghost was the soul and essence of a deceased Force-sensitive who denied the will of the Force upon death, yet was able to interact with the living,” according to the Star Wars Fandom. “It also describes those who committed a final act of selflessness that led to their death, and have come to terms with it.”

During The Phantom Menace, viewers had many questions when Qui-Gon Jinn’s body did not vanish after his duel with Darth Maul. He was instead cremated on a Jedi funeral pyre like Vader. However, in Revenge of the Sith, fans find out that dying and maintaining one’s identity does not happen to every Jedi. It is an ability that is acquired by Qui-Gon’s spirit and is then passed on to Yoda and Obi-Wan.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series will explain precisely how Jedi become Force ghosts

Although the Star Wars fandom describes the Force ghosts, it is still a little fuzzy as to exactly how it happens. The new upcoming series will rectify that. Viewers will see how a Jedi trains to become a Force ghost, according to We Got This Covered.

The new series will show us how Obi-Wan learns how to make himself a Force ghost. The show will give us more information about the Force as a whole. He will also encounter several other important characters who will teach him new things about the Force.

It will take ideas from the dialogue between Obi-Wan and Yoda at the end of Revenge of the Sith. After Padme dies, they decide that Obi-Wan will go to Tatooine to watch over Luke. This is when Yoda explains to Obi-Wan that he has been contacted by Force ghost Qui-Gon Jinn. Yoda also tells him that he will teach him how to interact with Jinn.

It will be interesting to learn more about the Force. It will also hopefully solidify our ideas about how Baby Yoda already has the Force in The Mandalorian. Look for more information to come regarding the new series when it starts filming in the summer of 2020.
