‘The Office’ Alum Mindy Kaling On Her Scriptwriting Gig for ‘Legally Blonde 3’ Starring Reese Witherspoon
Mindy Kaling is on board to co-write the eagerly anticipated comedy, Legally Blonde 3, starring Reese Witherspoon. She stopped by Good Morning America via video chat and revealed how she scored the high-profile gig.
‘Legally Blonde’ is an iconic film franchise
Nearly two decades after the original film hit theaters, Legally Blonde 3 is in the works. And movie buffs are giddy with excitement — and with good reason.
Witherspoon headlined the 2001 romantic comedy, Legally Blonde. In the film, she portrayed Elle Woods, a stylish sorority girl with a penchant for pink who gets dumped by her boyfriend, Warner, for a more sensible mate. In an elaborate plan to prove her worth, she applies– and gets in — to Harvard Law School where her ex is matriculating. “What? Like it’s hard?” Elle quipped to Warner.
Legally Blonde resonated with fans and critics alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie boasts both a positive Audience Score and Fresh Rating on the Tomatometer. Aside from the warm reception from moviegoers and pundits, Legally Blonde was a commercial success. According to Box Office Mojo, the film earned over $141 million on a mere $18 million budget. It also spawned a sequel, Legally Blonde 2, released in 2003, and a Broadway musical.
Now, the Legally Blonde series will continue with Witherspoon reprising her role as Elle and Kaling in a critical role behind the scenes.
Reese Witherspoon tapped Mindy Kaling to co-write the third movie
Kaling told the Good Morning America crew about the relationship she built with Witherspoon long before becoming attached to co-write Legally Blonde 3. Fans may remember the creative colleagues appearing on the big screen in A Wrinkle in Time.
“I’d been working with [Reese Witherspoon] on a couple movies, and we’ve been friends for a while,” said Kaling. “And I have always quoted the movies to her. I was that annoying friend that would be like ‘bend and snap.’”
In addition to her on-camera duties, Witherspoon will serve as a producer on the project. Kaling, who will co-write with Dan Goor, admitted to feeling somewhat nervous before taking the writing job. But ultimately, to the delight of fans, she accepted the challenge. She told Good Morning America this about how she became involved in the production:
It’s been over 20 years since she did the first movie, and [Reese Witherspoon] asked me, you know, ‘I’d really love to revisit this character.’ And I was nervous because the movie is so iconic. But then I thought it’d be really fun to see that character in her 40s now. Like, what is Elle Woods dealing with as a 41-year-old woman? And it’s been really funny… It’s been really funny to write, and I’m working on it with my friend, Dan, and I think it’s going to be a great movie for Reese, and people are going to love to see her in this part.Mindy Kaling on ‘Good Morning America’
About the film, Good Morning America host Michael Strahan expressed to Kaling, “We hope you write yourself in. I think that’ll make it even better.”
