‘The Office’: Mindy Kaling Just Gave Us A “Fashion Show At Lunch” To Promote Body Positivity
“Fashion show. Fashion show. Fashion show at lunch.” Whether she’s playing Kelly Kapoor on the hit NBC series, The Office, or just being herself, Mindy Kaling sure knows how to successfully encourage people to dress in a way that makes them feel confident. Now that Summer is fully underway, the 40-year-old actress has a body positive message for everyone to embrace their unique bodies exactly as they are.
For far too long, women have been pummeled with unrealistic beauty standards that only a fraction of people are able to live up to. In the Western world, the “ideal” body type is one that most people can never attain naturally. Though there has been a surge in recent years to include a variety of body types in the media, we still have a long way to go as a society before more people truly feel comfortable in the skin that they’re in. Knowing that this is an issue, Kaling took to her Instagram page to deliver a heartfelt message about body positivity to her fans.
A body positive Instagram post
Alongside two stunning photos of herself in brightly colored bikinis, the Late Night actress wrote, “IDK who needs to hear this but… WEAR A BIKINI IF YOU WANT TO WEAR A BIKINI. You don’t have to be a size 0. Swipe for my storytime and have a great summer.” But that was just the beginning of the writer‘s message to fans.
Kaling decided to take her message one step further and share a personal story about her experience embracing her bikini body. “So My very best friend in the world, Jocelyn, is from Hawaii. And I would go and visit her when I was in college. And what I was struck about Hawaii is that everybody wears bikinis. It does not matter what your body type is, you rock a bikini. Because you’re in Hawaii. And there’s so much body positivity there that I, who was always really shy about my body, would wear bikinis” The Office alum shared in a subsequent video.

Kaling then explained to her fans why she chose the bikinis she did and even encouraged them to post their own pictures of themselves rocking bikinis. “It’s summertime, so I thought it would be fun to do a little fashion shoot where I rock some high bottom bikinis because I feel that is more flattering for my figure and slightly more modest for summertime. And, if you guys get inspired and want to buy some, please send me pics. I would love to see them on Instagram. Umm…that’s it!” The Mindy Show actress ended exuberantly.
We love Kaling’s initiative to lead by example and embrace her body. This type of message is so essential to women, especially young girls, who feel self-conscious or insecure about their bodies because they don’t fit the “status quo.” We hope that the media will take note of the body positive movement and take steps to ensure that more women feel represented, loved, and appreciated for exactly who they are.
