‘The Office’ Set Decorations Give Subtle Shout-Outs to the Show’s Crew Members

There is a lot going on in the set of The Office that fans might not notice the smaller details. One of those details is the fact there are plaques on the walls that have names of unknown people. Jenna Fischer, who played Pam Beesly, revealed what the awards are and how they give shout outs to crew members.

The characters on The Office were often seen at their desk and in front of a computer. Sometimes the actors would use them when they weren’t filming. But this also got them in trouble.

“So in later seasons after we got internet and we stopped playing FreeCell, we would get in trouble if we had unapproved things on our screens,” Fischer explained on the Office Ladies podcast. Angela Kinsey then said, “Oh yeah, the camera guys would say, ‘Angela, we can totally see your email account.”

Fischer went on to explain what they were allowed to have on the screens in scenes. “There were certain things that we were allowed to show on computer screen like fake documents, the Dunder Mifflin logo, FreeCell games I guess we got that cleared,” she said.

Rainn Wilson was one of the many actors who would forget to check his screen. Fischer claimed that he lost money because of this.

“But we couldn’t have other stuff and we would get yelled at and then [Wilson] said, ‘You never have to tell me again about the screens, alright?! Stop hounding me about the screens. In fact, if you ever find something on my screen while we’re shooting that’s not allowed to be there I will donate $100 to charity every time,” she revealed.

Sadly, this didn’t mean he was better about remembering. “He had to pay out so much because he would forget,” she said.

A fan mentioned on Office Ladies in the episode “Conflict Resolution” that there are plaques on the wall in the accounting section of The Office. Fischer and Kinsey answered who are the people listed on them since it’s not the names of the characters.

“This is one of my favorite things about our set,” Fischer said. She explained that the art department was in charge of creating every card and sign for the show.

“In an effort to give just like a fun personal touch, they would include the names of real crew members,” Fischer said. Kinsey added, “For example, we also had a Salesman of the Year and a Humanitarian of the Year plaque and those plaques feature our crew members’ names as well.”

There are many plaques throughout the set. Fischer noted that The Office isn’t the only show to do this. “This is actually a very popular thing that happens on sets,” she said.

Fischer pointed out that her favorite one was made for someone who complained about not getting their own plaque. It is on the pole by Stanley (Leslie David Baker)’s desk. It mentions that the certificate goes to the person who was “whining” because they love her.
