‘The Old Guard’: Will There Be a Sequel to the Netflix Movie?

The Old Guard, a new action movie from Netflix, was the most-streamed film on the platform this past weekend. Starring Charlize Theron as a not-your-average superhero, the film is quickly picking up fans and critical acclaim. But does that mean we’ll get a The Old Guard sequel? Here’s what the director, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and the screenwriter, Greg Rucka, had to say.

‘The Old Guard’, based on the comic book of the same name, is trending on Netflix

The story of The Old Guard comes from a graphic novel written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Leandro Fernandez. Rucka (who wrote the screenplay) and director Prince-Bythewood took the well-reviewed comic book about immortal superheroes and turned it into the Netflix movie.

The Old Guard film covers the same material as the graphic novel The Old Guard: Opening Fire, a comic book consisting of 5 issues, published in 2017.

The first issue of The Old Guard: Force Multiplied (the 2nd book in the series) came out in 2019, and the next issue will be released in September of this year. So, the material for sequels already exists — but do the director and writer want to keep making The Old Guard?

Will there be a ‘The Old Guard’ 2?

In an interview with Collider, Prince-Bythewood explained how she felt about the idea of an Old Guard sequel.

“I would really have to think about that,” she admitted. “It’s been two years, and just coming out of it now, I’m eager for a rest.”

She expanded on the thought:

I would probably feel two ways about it. If it continues on, I was the first that established it, but it would probably also bug me and I’d be like, ‘Nile doesn’t do that!’ So, I just don’t know.

Answering a separate question about the end of the movie, The Old Guard director revealed: “I want you to want more, but again it is wholly up to the audience.” (Also, if you didn’t catch it: there’s a post-credits scene!)

Continuing to discuss the conclusion of the film, Prince-Bythewood explained she kept it rather open-ended because “it was part of the graphic novel.” She went on:

I always loved it because I felt there would have been a hole, if it didn’t end the way it did. …I know how I feel when things are left open, but for me, we told the story. It does have a beginning, middle, and end. And then, there is a hint and a possibility of more, but that’s absolutely up to the audience.

She did acknowledge that the author, Rucka, “has always envisioned [The Old Guard] as a trilogy.”

“I know where the story is going and it’s pretty dope,” Prince-Bythewood told Collider. “So, if the audience wants more, there’s certainly more story to tell.”

Rucka, the graphic novel author of The Old Guard, also commented on the idea of a sequel in an interview with Looper:

There is a complete three-part story that can be told and, God willing if it’s a success, Netflix comes back and says, ‘Hey, let’s do it again.’ There’s more to tell, and there’s questions that we want to answer. But right now, I gotta tell you this: If this is all we get, I am going to be a very happy guy.

Based on The Old Guard’s early success (it sat at No. 1 in the U.S. its opening weekend), as well as the creative team’s openness to the idea, it seems likely that we’ll get another one in the series.
