When Will ‘The Pioneer Woman’ Ree Drummond’s Book Be Turned Into a Movie?
The Pioneer Woman star Ree Drummond has enjoyed a lot of success ever since her blog of the same name took off. After the blog gained popularity, Ree proceeded to write books, get her own TLC show, and start several businesses. She even got her very own Barbie doll. One of the most exciting parts of her rise to fame was talk of a movie based on Ree’s life. When is Ree Drummond’s movie coming out? Here’s what we know.
The book that started it all
There was buzz about a movie based on Ree Drummond’s life after the release of her book The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels: A Love Story. The book was about how Ree moved from the city to Oklahoma to be with her husband, Ladd Drummond (she affectionately calls him Marlboro Man). The book is filled with descriptions of how she was falling head over heels in love with Ladd. Judging from this passage, we can see why the book was going to be turned into a movie. Here’s what Ree had to say about Ladd in her book:
The only thing on my mind the next morning was my date that night with Marlboro Man. It had become my new hobby, my new vocation, my interest in life. Marlboro Man had invited me to his ranch; he said he’d cook dinner this time. I didn’t much care what the plans were; I just wanted to see him again. Spend time in his presence. Get to know more about him, to kiss him goodnight for an hour. Or two. That was the only thing on my mind when I pulled out of my parents’ driveway that morning to run a few errands.
There’s already a Pioneer Woman movie
Did you know there’s already a movie titled Pioneer Woman? The TV movie was released on December 19, 1973, and it starred actor William Shatner and actress Joanna Pettet. The film is about a family from the Northeast who moves to Wyoming in the hopes of finding a better life. However, things don’t go so smoothly after the lead character’s (Maggie, played by Pettet) husband (John, played by Shatner) is killed. Maggie must decide if she should remain in Wyoming to manage the farm or movie back to the East Coast.
When will Ree Drummond’s book be turned into a movie?
By March 2010, the rights were acquired by Sony to make the movie and ideas for a script were in process. Reese Witherspoon was reportedly set to play the role of Ree Drummond. However, the production of the movie hit a roadblock in 2011 when executive producer Laura Ziskin passed away. The screenplay, written by Steel Magnolias’ Robert Harling, was set aside and he moved on to his next project, creating the ABC series GCB, reports Cinema Blend.
By 2012, things picked up again when Julie & Julia producer Laurence Mark and Pam Williams (former president of Laura Ziskin Productions) hired Hysteria writers Stephen Dyer and Jonah Lisa Dyer to rewrite Harling’s screenplay, reports Deadline. However, as of this writing, it looks like the future of The Pioneer Woman movie is up in the air.
