How ‘The Pioneer Woman’ Star Ree Drummond Creates Her Cookbooks
The Pioneer Woman star Ree Drummond recently released her latest cookbook, titled The Pioneer Woman Cooks: The New Frontier: 112 Fantastic Favorites for Everyday Eating. Fans are so excited about her book that they pre-ordered weeks in advance. Here’s what Drummond said about the creation process for her cookbooks and what the book’s title means to her.
What ‘The New Frontier’ means to Ree Drummond
In her interview with Tulsa World, Drummond reflects on what the title of her latest cookbook, The New Frontier, means to her. She says the book represents a lot of the new things that have taken place in her life. In her book’s introduction, she talks about the changes in her family, such as her two eldest children attending college and the death of her mother-in-law, reports Tulsa World. Drummond says the title of her book fits what has been happening with her lately. “When I started to examine the recipes that I particularly loved, and how they kind of reflected the new perspectives I’ve had as family and friendships have developed, ‘The New Frontier’ seemed to sum everything up.”
How Ree Drummond creates her cookbooks
Although Drummond cooks a lot and appears on her weekly Food Network show, that doesn’t mean gathering recipes for a new cookbook comes easily. Drummond puts a lot of care into each cookbook she creates. She told Tulsa World it often takes her a few months just to make a list of the recipes she wants to share in her cookbook. “Usually a new cookbook starts with me making a list of recipes I’m passionate about sharing. And that usually takes a couple of months, because things need to evolve before I come up with a more or less complete list. Then I see if there’s some sort of theme I can use to try and connect everything together.”
Ree Drummond on her ‘lower carb’ recipes
If you’ve been avoiding Drummond’s recipes because you’re trying to eat a low-carb diet, there’s no need to stay away from her food. The Food Network chef has recipes in her new cookbook that she refers to as “lower carb.” Drummond tells Tulsa World this reflects how she eats. “It’s something that I’ve been dabbling with,” she said. “I couldn’t in all honesty call these dishes ‘low carb,’ but they definitely are lower in carbs than some of my other recipes. It’s for when you want to lighten things up a bit.”
What kinds of “lower-carb” recipes will you find in Drummond’s book? Some of her lower-carb offerings include hamburgers with grilled portobello mushrooms as the buns, a “fried rice” dish made with cauliflower, and pan-fried chicken breasts with pesto cream sauce, reports Tulsa World.
Ree Drummond likes to keep things separate
Although Drummond says she wants to make sure whatever she takes on stands on its own, there are moments when her projects intersect. “I want everything to stand on its own, whether it’s the TV series or the cookbooks or my website,” she told Tulsa World. “But sometimes I’ll make something for the show, then take that and give a few tweaks, and it will end up as a different dish for a cookbook. And if things don’t turn out the way I want them to, then they get cut,” said Drummond. “I have this pile of poor little recipes that for one reason or another just weren’t good enough.”
