The Queen Never Had to Worry About Meghan Markle Like She Did With Kate Middleton

Kate Middleton is one of the most beloved members of the royal family. Married to Prince William since 2011, Middleton has since given birth to three children, all while seemingly effortlessly going about her royal duties. She’s even been making solo trips with Queen Elizabeth, a solid sign the queen is grooming Middleton to take over some of her work when she’s no longer ruling.

Still, there was a time when Queen Elizabeth wasn’t sure whether Middleton would make a good addition to the royal family. Read on to learn why Queen Elizabeth was wary of Kate Middleton many years ago and why she likely never had that concern with Meghan Markle.

Queen Elizabeth didn’t think Kate Middleton was established enough

Kate Middleton first met Prince William when they were both students, attending the prestigious University of St. Andrews in Scotland. The two started dating when they were still in their teens. While Kate Middleton did go on to get a job right after graduation, her work experience was relatively short, and she was often labeled in the press by the unkind nickname “Waity Katie,” a jab at the fact that she seemed to be waiting around on Prince William to propose.

This, it seems, was the source of the reservations that Queen Elizabeth had about Kate Middleton, according to a recent report. In the report, sources claim the queen was initially very concerned about Prince William and Kate Middleton’s impending engagement, believing that Middleton didn’t have enough of an identity of her own. Reportedly, the queen also didn’t think Middleton was working enough or doing enough to build an independent status before her entrance into the royal family.

Kate Middleton won Queen Elizabeth over eventually

Ultimately, Kate Middleton’s charm wore down her future grandmother-in-law. The source claims that Queen Elizabeth and Middleton bonded over their mutual love of the outdoors and the fact Middleton is close to her family. Queen Elizabeth loves being outside and in the company of her animals, and she loved that Middleton is equally at ease going to sporting events or horseback riding.

These days, while Middleton and Queen Elizabeth might not be bosom buddies, they share healthy respect and reportedly, the queen “admires” Middleton a great deal. When it comes to royal daughters-in-law, there is one that Queen Elizabeth is even closer to.

Meghan Markle had an established career when she met Prince Harry

Unlike Kate Middleton, who had a very early entrance to the royal family, and many years of dating Prince William before they got engaged, Meghan Markle’s induction was rather swift. While this might have been concerning to some family members, Queen Elizabeth could likely have seen this as an advantage. After all, Meghan Markle was in her mid-thirties when she met Prince Harry and had a thriving career as an actress on a popular TV show.

Meghan Markle had lived her life independently for many years, and often had to struggle to make ends meet. In spite of the drama with her family and the negative words of critics who accused her of being a social climber, it was clear that Markle was well-prepared to handle the very specific duties and responsibilities of being a member of the royal family. Reportedly, Markle’s independence endeared her to Queen Elizabeth and the two became fast friends. Queen Elizabeth even threw a special birthday party for Meghan Markle this year, as a sign of her favor.
