The Real Meaning Behind the Name of Pippa Middleton and James Matthews’ Son

When a royal family member has a baby, one of the things people mostly look forward to is finding out the baby’s name. Often times, new royal babies are given names that carry significant meaning — and Pippa Middleton and James Matthews’ son is no exception.

Kate Middleton’s sister and her husband celebrated the arrival of their first baby together, Arthur Michael William, on Oct. 15, 2018. With a name like that, there’s no way it doesn’t carry some sort of significance. Here’s everything we know about why Middleton and Matthews selected each part of their son’s name.

Arthur

As it turns out, “Arthur” is an important name in the British royal family. According to Town & Country, “Arthur nods to the 6th-century king, and his roundtable of knights.” Plus, Arthur is the middle name of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s youngest son, Prince Louis. Aside from the family connections, Arthur also technically translates to the word “bear.”

Michael

It was pretty much guaranteed that “Michael” would end up somewhere in the name of Middleton and Matthews’ son. It’s a significant moniker for each of the new parents for very different reasons. First, Michael is the name of Middleton’s father. It’s also the name of James’ brother, Michael Matthews, who passed away at just 22 years old while climbing Mount Everest in 1999. The name carries heavy meaning all on its own, translating to, “Who is like God?”

William

We wouldn’t be surprised if “William” were in honor of the Duke of Cambridge. Considering the first two parts of his name are so meaningful to their families, it would make sense that the third part was named after the prince. And if that’s the case, we couldn’t love it more. In general, William is a very popular name in England — meaning “strong-willed warrior.”

Will their son have a title?

Even though Arthur is the first cousin of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, he will not have any type of official royal title. No matter what, we’ll love getting to see all the royal children (including Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s future baby) growing up together.

A source revealed to People that Middleton and Matthews plan on “having children and leading a quiet life.” However, considering their relations within the royal family, we’re hopeful that we’ll get to catch glimpses of Arthur now and then.

Middleton gave birth to Arthur at the same hospital as her sister

Arthur already has a ton in common with his three royal cousins, considering they were all born not just in the same hospital, but in the very same wing. Middleton was seen visiting the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital not long before she gave birth, which revealed she was prepared for delivery any day at that point.

The hospital costs nearly $10,000 a night, but for good reason. Only a few of the amenities included are extreme security measures and discretion for high-profile patients, spacious (and private) suites, and even massages for expectant and new mothers.

How William and Kate reacted to Arthur’s arrival

Of course, William and Kate had an adorable reaction to the news of Arthur’s arrival. Now that they officially have aunt and uncle statuses, they couldn’t help but share their joy. Kensington Palace announced in a statement, “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are thrilled for Pippa and James.”
