The Real Reason Chris Hemsworth Is Quitting Hollywood and When Will He Be Back?
If you’re chomping at the bit to see Asgardians of the Galaxy, you may want to relax your jaw muscles. Chris Hemsworth has announced he’s taking a break from Hollywood for a while.
The Daily Mail reports the Thor actor he wants to spend some time with his family. No reasonable person would fault him for that, especially after the massive effort it took to make Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
That does mean, however, the next movie featuring Thor, whether that be Thor 4 or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, will probably not hit screens until at least 2022.
Why Chris Hemsworth is taking a break
Hemsworth told The Daily Telegraph he plans to spend more time in Byron Bay, the coastal town in northern Australia where he lives with his family. He and his wife, Elsa, have three children.
“This year I probably won’t shoot anything. I just want to be at home now with my kids,” he said. “They are at a very important age. They are still young and they are aware when I leave more than before.”
Now that his kids are older, the time when dad leaves is starting to feel more acute for the young Hemsworths, especially for 7-year-old India Rose.
“She’s normally like, ‘Yeah, see you, daddy. Cool.’ [This time] she was like, “Papa! Papa! Papa!” She doesn’t always call me Papa, either,’ he told GQ. The tug of the hammer is strong, but the tug of the heartstrings is stronger.
Chris Hemsworth’s upcoming schedule
Hemsworth may be through with Marvel (for now), but the movies aren’t through with Hemsworth. He has to spend the next few weeks promoting Men in Black: International, which comes out June 13. He reunites with Thor: Ragnarok castmate Tessa Thompson, and it is their task to find out who the mole is in the MIB organization.
It’s the first MIB movie since Men in Black 3 in 2012, and it’s the first not to be directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. Taking over the reins is F. Gary Gray, who made Fate of the Furious and The Italian Job remake.
After that comes Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, from director Kevin Smith, where Hemsworth will probably get to show off the kind of comic chops he used in the 2017 Ghostbusters. Then comes Dhaka, which is about an Indian businessman who recruits a missionary to find his adopted son. The script is by Joe Russo, who directed Hemsworth in Infinity War and Endgame.
All of these are projects Hemsworth has already shot, so now he’d just have to do promotion, leaving him free to chill with his family for awhile.
Marvel’s upcoming schedule
Notice what’s not on the list of Hemsworth’s upcoming movies: anything from Marvel. Endgame saw Thor leaving Earth with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Their zany adventures made for a good fit with Thor’s interstellar sensibilities. So that means that Thor will be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, right?
Probably, but right now we can’t say when that movie will come out. Disney/Marvel has reserved places on the calendar but has not specified what the titles will be. If Hemsworth is taking time off the rest of this year, that certainly rules out any Marvel movie in 2020 and maybe 2021 too.
For that matter, James Gunn’s directing card is full too. After Disney initially dropped him from Guardians 3, Gunn decided to play for the other team and direct the Suicide Squad sequel, which is due out in August of 2021. This is not to be confused the Harley Quinn-focused Birds of Prey, which comes out Feb. 7 of next year, and is directed by Cathy Yan.
So if The Suicide Squad is to stick to its August date, Gunn will probably need a breather himself before Guardians 3, which means it will come out Feb. 8, May 6 or July 29, 2022.
