The Real Reason Gwyneth Paltrow Is Quitting the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Ever since Iron Man was released in 2008, Marvel has been on a roll, releasing game-changing hit after hit. The Marvel universe has spawned such films as Marvel’s The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, and Black Panther.
This year, Avengers: Endgame is getting released, and while the film will undoubtedly signal the end of the line for several popular characters, there’s always the distinct possibility that those characters (and the actors playing them) will show up in a leading role in another series for Marvel. However, Gwyneth Paltrow recently spoke out about the fact that Endgame will be her swan song from the Marvel universe.
Who does Gwyneth Paltrow play in the Marvel movies?
Gwyneth Paltrow first appeared in 2008’s Iron Man, playing opposite Robert Downey, Jr.’s Tony Stark. She inhabited the role of Pepper Potts, Tony Stark’s assistant, and eventual love interest. Paltrow’s no-nonsense attitude was perfect for the role of Potts, and she quickly became a fan favorite. Since Iron Man, Paltrow has also played important roles in 2010’s Iron Man 2, and 2013’s Iron Man 3, where she even donned the famous suit in order to save Tony Stark from a deadly fate.
In addition to leading roles in the Iron Man series, Paltrow has appeared in a smaller capacity in other Marvel films as Potts, including The Avengers in 2012, Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017, and Avengers: Infinity War in 2018. She has become strongly connected to the character, and it’s natural that fans would want her to continue playing Pepper Potts indefinitely. However, Paltrow’s recent remarks indicate that she feels like it’s time to retire the sky-high Potts heels and focus on other pursuits.
Will ‘Endgame’ be Gwyneth Paltrow’s last Marvel film?
Paltrow opened up about how much the Marvel films mean to her, and how lucky she has been to have participated in such an iconic franchise. But she also admitted that her appearance in Endgame would likely be her last.
Paltrow is 46 years old, and she stated that she feels as though that’s too old to continue appearing in superhero movies. “I feel like I’m a bit old to be in a suit and all that at this point,” Paltrow said, although she did say that it’s been great to see how much the movies have come to mean to fans.
Paltrow’s swan song as Potts doesn’t mean that she won’t ever make a cameo appearance though – in the same interview, she said that if a situation were to arise where Marvel execs needed her to come in and film a quick cameo or bit part, she would be happy to do so. Knowing how much Marvel loves their cameos, it’s reasonable to assume that fans can expect to see Paltrow in some capacity, down the line.
Paltrow’s real reason to leave Hollywood and what will she do now?
Besides her appearances in the Marvel films, Paltrow has mostly stepped away from acting. In a recent interview, the actress stated that for the most part, she finds Hollywood frustrating and prefers to put her time and energy towards things that make her feel better. The majority of her time seems to be focused on developing her lifestyle brand Goop, a web-based company that has spawned a global empire including a magazine, a podcast, and an upcoming Netflix series.
Paltrow is an internationally acclaimed actress, but adding businesswoman to her resume seems to have brought her more fulfillment than movie acting ever did. Fans who wish to see more of Paltrow in the future might want to follow Goop a bit more closely, and of course, check out Avengers: Endgame, in theaters April 2019.
