The Real Reason Prince William and Prince Harry Are So Protective of Their Wives

Prince William has been with Kate Middleton since their college days at the University of Saint Andrews in Scotland back in the early 2000s. As soon as they went public with their relationship, cameras began following Kate everywhere. She once complained that she couldn’t even so much as get a cup of take-out coffee without being followed, and William was understandably angry.

Years later, when Prince Harry met his wife, Meghan Markle, history repeated itself. They announced they were a couple, and suddenly, paparazzi were camped outside of Meghan’s Toronto home. Concerned for Meghan’s safety, Kensington Palace issued a statement to the media asking them to keep their distance from the American actress. Some people might wonder, why are William and Harry so protective of Kate and Meghan?

Back to the days of Princess Diana

Royal fans vividly remember William and Harry’s mother, Princess Diana. We look back on her with nostalgia and love, remembering the kind-hearted person she was. Wherever Diana went, flashbulbs were constantly going off. Everyone wanted to get a photograph of the princess, whether she was doing charity work or attending a formal dinner. Diana was, unfortunately, constantly being harassed by paparazzi, to the point where she could barely walk down the street without having her picture taken. She, too, issued several statements asking photographers to please allow her some privacy. Unfortunately, it did not happen.

The Paris car crash

In August of 1997, Princess Diana was in Paris with her friend, Dodi Fayed. After having dinner, the pair left the hotel they were staying at and noticed they were being followed by approximately 25 photographers. The car was traveling at an extraordinarily high speed, and the driver ultimately lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a pillar in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel. Diana, along with Fayed, as well as the driver of the car, Henri Paul, were all tragically killed in the crash.

Is this why William and Harry are so protective of their wives?

At the time of Diana’s death, William was just 15 years old, and Harry was only 12 years of age. The loss impacted their lives tremendously, and they still talk about it to this day. Now that they are both married, they understand the consequences of being in the public eye. Their wives are both extremely popular with royal fans around the world, and photographs of them are priceless. Both princes want to ensure their wives are as safe as possible at all times.

How do Prince William and Prince Harry feel?

Naturally, both William and Harry suffered quite a loss when their mother passed away at such a young age. Harry has said that he wishes that there was something he could have done to keep Diana safe, and it’s likely that William feels the same way. However, since they were both still children at the time of her death, there really wasn’t anything they could do. Now that they are older, with wives of their own, they will stop at nothing to protect Kate and Meghan.

Protecting their families

Since Prince William has three children of his own and Prince Harry has a baby on the way, they may feel that photographers are even more persistent at following their wives and families. Chances are, both princes will go above and beyond to make sure there are proper security measures in place whenever Kate, Meghan, and their children are traveling or making public appearances. It’s certainly understandable that the best protection possible is something that is extremely important to William and to Harry. The entire world adored Princess Diana, and she will forever be missed!
