The Real Reason Why ‘Little People, Big World’ Stars Matt and Amy Roloff Divorced
As soon as TLC’s Little People, Big World premiered in 2006, viewers were captivated by the Roloff family — and the loyal fan base is what keeps the show going today. The show originally centered around the lives of Matt and Amy Roloff, a middle-aged married couple who both have dwarfism. Viewers got to see how they ran their farm, lived daily life with their condition, and dealt with everyday family dynamics. The couple has four kids, though only one, Zach, was also born with dwarfism.
Matt and Amy seemingly had a strong marriage — but in recent years, things between them fell apart, and they decided to go their separate ways. Here’s why they chose to separate.
Matt and Amy were married for nearly 30 years before they decided to split
In Touch Weekly explains fans didn’t suspect anything was wrong with Matt and Amy’s marriage for years — so when the couple announced they were splitting in 2015, everyone was shocked. They had been married for almost three decades and fans didn’t understand what could have gone wrong. Not only did they have to film their show together, but they also had Roloff Farms to run as a family. It seemed like everything was bound to be compromised.
Thankfully, the couple promised to remain cordial with each other through the divorce proceedings — and they both still participate in Little People, Big World. “Our kids and our ever-growing family, and the love and support we have for them, will be our priority. We will continue to work together side-by-side in the daily responsibilities for our many current ventures,” Amy and Matt announced in a joint statement.
The couple didn’t see eye to eye when it came to commitment
It turns out there were red flags from the very beginning of their marriage. When news of a separation hit the media, rumors of a cheating scandal also rocked viewers. While many are unsure what may have transpired between Matt and his current girlfriend, Caryn Chandler, In Touch Weekly notes Matt has mentioned how he views commitment much differently than Amy does.
In the couple’s book, Little People, Big Values, Matt wrote, “While Amy puts commitment at or near the top of her list, I would put it further down. Amy tends to be more of a committed-to-a-fault kind of person, while I see most commitments — with some very notable exceptions — as flexible and negotiable.” This difference in values most likely put a huge rift in their relationship over time.
Matt said their marriage took a downturn after their kids were born
Not only were their values misaligned, but Matt also mentioned on a more recent episode of Little People, Big World that he felt his marriage was already heading south after his four children were born. In Touch Weekly reports Matt said, “It really warms my heart. Amy and I had some compatibility when the kids were born, but looking back after the kids were gone, we realized we don’t really have a lot in common.” He also continued by saying he’s now in a situation where he feels much more compatible with his partner.
As for what Amy’s said about Matt, she’s mentioned feeling uncomfortable working with his girlfriend on the farm before. And she’s also said that Matt’s commitment to working on the farm over spending quality time with her is one of the reasons for their failed marriage.
They both are dating new people now
It appears Matt and Amy are both moving forward with their lives as friends and co-workers — and they both are dating new people. As stated before, Matt is seeing Caryn. The two first met when Caryn was a manager on the family’s farm. And though it was difficult for Amy to accept that someone she was employing was now her ex-husband’s girlfriend, she was still able to be perfectly civil with Caryn.
As for Amy, she seems over the moon for her boyfriend, Chris Marek. They started dating toward the end of 2017 and are still going strong. She’s posted plenty of wonderful blessings about him on her Instagram, too.
