The Real Reason Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner Had a Vegas Wedding Before The Real One

No one can deny the chemistry between Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner. The happily married couple tied the knot for the second time in France after getting married in Las Vegas on May 1. The first ceremony took place at A Little White Chapel after the 2019 Billboard Music Awards. The second European wedding occurred in southern France amongst family and friends. Why did the couple choose to get married in the United States first prior to the European ceremony? The answer may surprise you.

They had a wedding in Vegas first for legal purposes

The second set of nuptials was said in a stunning ceremony at a French chateau. Jonas spoke with BAZAAR.com about the first wedding and why it preceded the second. “We had to do a legal marriage before we did a real big one. It was either the courthouse, or our version, and I preferred our version. Friends, Elvis, and Ring Pops,” said Jonas.

A source revealed to People that the couple “had to get married in the States to make it legal, but the wedding is still in Europe.” The couple outdid themselves in an extravagant ceremony complete with the people closest to them.

It’s common for international couples to marry first before a French ceremony

According to the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in France, “At least one of the parties to be married must have resided in France for at least forty days immediately preceding the marriage. This precludes a wedding in cases where both parties are only visiting for a short stay”; furthermore, “In France a religious ceremony does not constitute a legal marriage.” Due to the residency restrictions, many international couples opt for a legal wedding in their home country before having a wedding in France, as Jonas and Turner did.

The couple wanted to do it “right” a second time

A source told ET that the couple wanted to do it right with a second ceremony. “Sophie and Joe knew the moment they decided to tie the knot in Vegas that they would do it ‘right’ the second time around,” said the source. “They both are spontaneous and loved their Vegas wedding but there was never a question as to if they would get married ‘properly,’ as they referred to it, later in the year.” The couple said “I do” for the second time on June 29.

When does the married couple plan to start a family?

A source has revealed to HollywoodLife about when in fact Jonas and Turner plan to start a family of their own. The source close to the couple says a family isn’t in the near future for the pair just yet. Their careers are taking off, and they have time to plan for a family in the future.

“All of Sophie’s immediate work is complete but she is looking to hit the ground running now that Game of Thrones is over,” the source says. “She wants to get a few more acting gigs before she starts a family. As for Joe, he is on tour with his brothers and he is interested in starting a family after the tour. They both think it would be really cool to start early next year and the thought hasn’t escaped them that they could start and try to get pregnant when the tour ends [in Europe].”

Jonas and Turner appear to be happily married and content with their lives together. Only time will tell when they choose to start their family.
