The Reason Meghan Markle Almost Got Princess Diana’s Engagement Ring
Imagine if Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, were to have Princess Diana’s engagement ring instead of her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge. Turns out, that scenario came closer to happening than we realized. Keep reading to learn how Markle almost ended up with Princess Diana’s engagement ring.
Princess Diana’s ring belonged to Prince Harry
After their mother, Princess Diana died in 1997, her sons Princes William and Harry went to Kensington Palace to pick out a “keepsake,” according to Reader’s Digest.
Prince Harry, who at the time was 12 years old, selected his mother’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring. And his older brother, Prince William, who was 15 years old, picked his mother’s Cartier watch.
How did Prince William end up with his mother’s engagement ring?
In 2010 when Prince William proposed to his long-time girlfriend, Kate Middleton, he popped the question using his mother’s engagement ring. How did this happen? Prince Harry offered the ring to his older brother.
“They had an agreement that whoever got engaged first would have Diana’s ring,” a source said, according to Reader’s Digest. So, Prince Harry who had been in possession of the engagement ring for 13 years gave it to his brother despite the fact that Prince William chose the Cartier watch not the ring.
How did Prince William propose?
Prince William proposed to his college girlfriend in the fall of 2010. The future leader of the British monarchy popped the question in Kenya where he and Middleton stayed in a remote log cabin.
At their engagement announcement in Nov. 2010, Prince William talked about the significance of giving his mother’s engagement ring to Middleton. The prince said proposing with the ring of his late mother was “my way of making sure my mother didn’t miss out on today and the excitement.”
“It’s very special to me,” he added. “As Kate’s very special to me now, it was right to put the two together.”
Prince Harry included his mother in Markle’s engagement ring
Prince Harry proposed to Markle while they were at home roasting a chicken, according to an interview the couple gave following their engagement announcement.
“It was so sweet and natural and very romantic,” Markle told BBC. “He got on one knee.”
Harry added that he thought he caught Markle by surprise, which she confirmed. Markle remembered that she said yes right away. “I could barely let you finish proposing,” Markle told Prince Harry in the interview.
Although Prince Harry didn’t propose to Markle with his mother’s engagement ring, he still made sure his mother was part of the proposal.
“The ring is obviously yellow gold because that’s [Meghan’s] favorite and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana and the little diamonds on either side are from [Princess Diana’s] jewelry collection, to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together,” Prince Harry said during the interview.
“It’s beautiful, and he designed it. It’s incredible,” Markle added.
