Princess Diana wasn’t known for being quiet about her husband’s infamous affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. At the beginning of her marriage to Charles, Diana was naïve and in denial about what was really going on between them. She quickly learned the truth of his affair with Camilla and she didn’t just sit back and stay silent. Diana decided to speak out about the situation for all the world to hear. Read on to learn why.
Princess Diana didn’t just let her husband’s affair with Camilla Parker Bowles slide
Princess Diana was caught up in the spotlight early on in her courtship with Prince Charles. She was so in love with him in the beginning with such high hopes. She was sure things were going to work out, but she was so wrong. Eventually, things became crystal clear that Charles was having an affair with Camilla. Diana obviously didn’t just sit back and take it. She spoke to her husband on multiple occasions and even spoke to Camilla once just so she knew that Diana was aware of what was going on. But that wasn’t the only time Diana talked about the situation.
Why Diana spoke out about Charles’ affair
Diana decided to come clean in her tell-all biography that was written by Andrew Morton. Diana participated in taped conversations with Dr. James Colthurst for material for the novel. She opened up about everything, including about Charles’ affair with Camilla which Diana’s viewed as the reason for the marriage failing. In Diana: Her True Story – In Her Own Words, she spoke about Charles’ infidelity in a whole new light. She was miserable in the marriage and she wanted the world to know her side of things. She didn’t think it was her fault and she wanted the public to know what she was going through. People were overwhelmingly supportive of the Princess, though she still had her critics at the same time.
‘There were three of us in this marriage’
However, that wasn’t the only time Princess Diana spoke to the media about Charles’ affair with Camilla. Diana participated in the BBC’s Panorama Interview with Martin Bashir in 1995. She talked about her husband’s affair and how she couldn’t do anything about it.
“But I wasn’t in a position to do anything about it,” Diana said. When asked how she knew, she said, “Oh, a woman’s instinct is a very good one.”
She spoke about how her husband loved someone else and how it changed things. How did she know? “By the change of behavioural pattern in my husband; for all sorts of reasons that a woman’s instinct produces; you just know,” Diana said.
When asked if Camilla was a factor in the breakdown of her marriage to Charles, Diana said arguably her most famous line, “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”
Diana didn’t just sit down and take the betrayal. She spoke about it out loud for the whole world to hear. Eventually, Diana and Charles finalized their divorce in 1996 once the damage became too much.
