The 1 Simple Reason Princess Diana ‘Wanted It to Work’ Between Herself and Prince Charles

Princess Diana was so naïve about what her life was going to be when she first married Prince Charles. She thought things were going to work out the way she wanted, just like the rest of the world was hoping for. It seemed to be like a fairy tale ending when she finally married the Prince of Wales. Diana quickly realized how wrong she was. However, she tried to make her marriage work to the best of her ability.

Princess Diana knew what her duty was going into the marriage: she needed to produce children and excel in her role as the Princess of Wales. Without a manual, Diana did her best even though she wasn’t born to the task set before her. She initially really struggled to come to terms with her immense popularity with the people. It caused problems with Prince Charles as well, straining the marriage even further.

Despite the rather rocky transition, Princess Diana married into the Royal Family and produced not only an heir, but a spare to boot. She was determined to stay grounded and make the marriage flourish among the flashes of cameras. Princess Diana spoke about her early expectations for marriage in the explosive BBC’s Panorama Interview with Martin Bashir that she participated in. Her comments during that interview shocked many and revealed Diana’s real-world view.

Why Princess Diana ‘wanted it to work’ with Prince Charles

Princess Diana came from a divorced household herself and she didn’t want to put her children through the same thing. She struggled along with Prince Charles while being stuck in an unhappy marriage. She wasn’t about to give up, especially with so much at stake. The entire world was rooting for them, and it must have been a daunting thought that their marriage not working would displease so many people.

“I think like any marriage, specially when you’ve had divorced parents like myself, you’d want to try even harder to make it work and you don’t want to fall back into a pattern that you’ve seen happen in your own family,” Princess Diana said. “I desperately wanted it to work, I desperately loved my husband and I wanted to share everything together, and I thought that we were a very good team.”

There was a lot of trouble within the marriage between Diana and Charles. Diana had unhealthy ways of coping with stress, including an eating disorder, bulimia nervosa. She also tried to hurt herself on multiple occasions and struggled with her newfound fame. It took her a long time to get things under control, but she eventually recovered and found a real sense of purpose in her life’s work.

Charles was undertaking an ongoing affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, something which of course caused a great amount of stress for Diana. She wanted her marriage to work, but it was nearly impossible when she couldn’t seem to keep his attention for long. He was preoccupied with Camilla, and so Diana and Charles grew even further apart.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles divorced

Eventually, they had a separation that occurred in 1992. Their subsequent divorce happened in August 1996. Princess Diana may have lost her husband Prince Charles, but she still had the love and adoration of her people as well as her children. She set a new royal precedent and left her mark on the Royal Family.
