The Reason Solange Isn’t Performing At Coachella

Being a younger sibling already has its challenges. Solange Knowles might know that more than most people, being the younger sister to cultural icon and performer Beyoncé. Willingly or not, Solange has taken the backseat to her sister for years — outside of attempting to attack Jay-Z in an elevator. Comparatively, her music career did not gain much traction until she released A Seat At The Table in 2016. Despite all of that, since 2016 she has gained widespread adoration by releasing no-nonsense tracks commenting on the state of society.

Solange’s fifth album A Seat At The Table is a chill, more substantial album given its heavy criticisms and comments on the myths of post-racial America and the woes of being a black woman in America. It was a change of pace from the upbeat ’90s inspired R&B albums she had previously released. The album quickly gained a loving audience and fans could not wait until she released When I Get Home.

Solange released ‘When I Get Home’ in March

Solange’s most recent album When I Get Home was released in March. It has the familiar sounds of A Seat At The Table but refreshingly is not a copy and paste of the previous album. Listeners will hear how the album is packed with featured artists like Gucci Mane, Pharrell, Sampha, Panda Bear, Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler the Creator, Playboi Carti, Dev Hynes, Cassie, and more. Her only dates to perform in the near future are May 30 in Denmark and June 6 in Portugal.

With the timing of Solange’s album release and the upcoming Coachella festival in California, it made sense that Solange was originally scheduled to perform. Despite the organizer of the event funding anti-abortion, pro-gun, and anti-LGBT organizations, it is one of the biggest festivals in North America and hosts nearly all the biggest names in the industry.

Why is Solange not performing at Coachella?

Solange accepted the Seat At The Table but gave up the performance slot at Coachella. She was scheduled to perform on both Saturdays of the festival on April 13 and April 20. Solange would have been joined by Tame Impala, Kid Cudi, Weezer, and BASSNECTAR. Solange released a statement on her social media Sunday night explaining that the last minute cancelation is “due to major production delays.” Coachella apologized, but many fans still complained about the short notice.

Fans aren’t happy about the cancellation

The cancellation happened five days before the beginning of the festival and although fans know the lineup is subject to change, many bought tickets hoping only to see Solange perform for the second time after the iconic performance with her sister. And there has been no word on who will be replacing the artist.

Who else is performing at Coachella?

Coachella announced its 2019 lineup January 3. As per usual, the festival is packed with the all-stars of this year’s music scene. The headliners are Childish Gambino and Ariana Grande. The festival also features acts like King Princess, Diplo, Janelle Monaé and Jaden Smith.
